When his book had first come out, the only thing that he hears from of any of them is a vintage postcard with the word liar messily scribbled on it in English so that the intent is crystal clear. The dark ink is smeared, which makes the message a little less visceral but not any less accurate.

I can easily wrap a scarf around my face and no one will notice. My mask was gone, blown away and burnt up in the fires of my hydrogen gas, and I am glad. It would feel like Ludendorff’s hands framing my face, thumb along the hollow of my cheek, and I want none of it.

“Hi there, Lucy not-my-brother’s-fiancée.” Jack’s words tumble out in rush. “There’s a dinner tonight, and you’re invited.”

    “Uh… why?”

“Here’s the thing.” Jack’s almost panicky, and is practically bouncing on his feet. “You didn’t mention that they liked you, like – they really liked you, as if bells started ringing from up above in your presence, on what would’ve been an otherwise monumentally crappy Christmas—”

Lucy inhales sharply. “You didn’t tell them.”

“I…” Jack crosses his arms. “It wasn’t my secret to confess.”
