    Bookmarker's Notes

He doesn’t mimic relaxation and appears stiff, but Daniels likes that he doesn’t imitate humanness as much as he used to with her. “I don’t know exactly,” he says. “But part of my programming is meant to escape me: it’s for spontaneity. So that I can be surprised when I learn, and in return learn from that surprise.”

    “What has surprised you lately?”

    “You.”

    “What in me?”

Walter’s eyes go blank as he examines something inside. “I can’t say. Just you.”

He straightens, turns, looks out the chamber's opening to the wide, dead city beyond. Out there, he knows, is the vessel his crew had found. The bringer of all this death and loss, inefficiency and failure. Out there is his executable path. Walter tests his legs, grips the jackknife—the very one that'd taken his eye, that he'd found next to his brother's severed hand—and walks out into the light.

The lesson here, Susie thinks, is that tricking Death is tricky business. How do you outwit the personification of oblivion? Chess, obviously, won’t be the answer.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The game drags on, and Susie realizes--she can do this indefinitely. She can keep playing and playing, making up nonsensical decree after nonsensical decree. The sun can stay glued to the edge of the horizon, the campus can permanently stay empty, and she can stay alive as long as she keeps Death occupied with the game.

In the same breath, she realizes that she's tired, that she wants to go home and put on some sweatpants and drink a mug of hot chocolate. She wants to call her mom and bitch about her weird day. She wants to email Calvin and see if he'll believe her.

That’s how it feels to come into Chidi’s home. Like the world is made of Chidi, and it’s holding her in a tight but gentle embrace.

“Meta-ethical relativism,” she says with a nod. “Universal prescriptivism."

    Chidi stares at her.

“Yes, actually,” he says. “That’s exactly right."

She smiles. She knows it is.
