When he had turned fifteen, the marks had ebbed into his skin at a snail’s pace, beginning with a deer’s head displaying large antlers on his inner wrist. A spotted panther had then threatened to eat the sheep on his lower back.
His insides had churned and he had bathed in his father’s blood and guts and the hound had given his names, each one from each life before he had been bitten and turned and enslaved by the moon. I was Dederick, Teutorigos, Tielo, Diederick, Ties. Derek. Please call me Derek, Firestarter.

“Go sic ’em, boy,” he whispers, and the man moves like lightning. His jaw tenses as fangs rip apart the djinns’ throats, and there is ice in the spirits’ veins, he would bet, when he snaps long fingers, cups his hands to his mouth, and blows a stream of frost into the fray. The man snarls louder as he meets the main djinn in the center of the clearing, and he pounces immediately when the gust of ice meets his side.
