“With you it’s always ‘Father this’, ‘Father that’.” Gianna sniffed. “It’s an obnoxious habit. Very childish. Act your age.”

“Oh? And trying to interrupt a stranger about his business isn’t obnoxious?”

“You’re such an asshole,” Gianna said, incredulous. “I can’t believe you said that. We’re trying to save a life.”

“If you were remotely interested in charity of that nature you wouldn’t be in the family business.”

The stranger was staring at them now, blinking owlishly. It wasn’t an unfamiliar reaction to anyone exposed to his sister and their quarrels. “Do you guys mind?” he said finally. His voice was rusty, seldom used.

    Summary

John had been acting odd all morning, staying closer than usual, even when Santino snapped at him after breakfast. Normally, John would take the hint and make himself scarce, sitting in the garden or hiding in the nursery, but today something had clearly malfunctioned. Santino was heading out to the driveway, buttoning his jacket, when John caught him by the elbow. Cassian actually startled. When they weren’t alone, John was painstakingly unobtrusive.

    “Yes?” Santino pulled away.

    “Where are you going?”

“Rome.” Santino narrowed his eyes. “Why?”

John stilled, looking Santino over searchingly. His face stayed blank, but Santino had learned the cues, subtle as they were. This was John’s version of confusion. “Now?”

    “Obviously. What’s wrong with you?”

John stared at him for a moment more, bemused, then he leaned in, close to Santino’s ear. “You’re going into heat.”

    Summary

Aurelio, to his credit, actually managed ten minutes of small talk before sheer curiosity got the better of him. “Heard you’re pregnant.”

John raised his eyebrows. He had been carefully stacking the cases Santino had previously confiscated from Aurelio on the workbench. “Do I look pregnant?”

“I don’t mean you literally,” Aurelio said, making no move towards the cases. The mechanic was leaning against the car he had been working on when John had wandered into the chopshop: a badly battered antique Jaguar, hoisted up on a cherry picker. He wiped his hands on a rag, dark hair plastered to head by sweat, the fluorescent bars in the chopshop giving his skin a bluish tint. “None of my business, but. I gotta ask. Did you guys uh. Fall in lurrve somehow, like, they say, there’s a thin line between love and hatred and—”

John stared pointedly across the workshop, and Aurelio’s assistants began making a show of being busy on tasks, shuffling off out of sight. “No,” John said. “It’s not compulsory.”

    Summary

Like most of the Excommunicado in the Tribunal Res Judicata, John never asked questions. When he straightened up from Cardinal Fredoli’s ring, he inclined his head, stepping back, his eyes fixed on the floor, already thinking about process. He’d have to get outfitted again. Visit the Apostolic Records—

“John.” Fredoli, as always, was gentle. “Do you ever question the Dispensation?”

John blinked. He waited for a moment, just in case the question was rhetorical. Fredoli had never said a word to him before other than to confirm the issuance or completion of Penitent Markers. “No,” he said finally.

“Do you know how many before you have gone against Gianna D’Antonio?”

    “Three.”

“Two were returned in several parts. One was not returned at all.”

    Summary

Because Santino D’Antonio was a massive asshole even within John’s extensive experience with people of the total asshole variety, this was how John found out that he was a father: a 2am phone call, on a Wednesday, Santino on the line. “If it’s a boy, do you have a preference for a name?”

John double checked the caller ID, blinking into the dark, then the time. “Santino? The hell are you talking about?” At the foot of the bed, Dog snuffled inquiringly, peeking up.

Santino let out a long-suffering sigh, as though John was being difficult and not, as it were, woken up in the middle of the night by someone he’d only definitively decided he wasn’t going to kill a week ago and whom he hadn’t seen or talked to in a couple of months. “The child. If it’s a girl, I think we’re obliged to name her after my sister. If it’s a boy, hm, I don’t know. I was going to say my father, but Cassian said I should get your input.”

    Summary

John’s grip on the gun was steady, the pistol trained on Santino, not wavering in the least even when Winston stepped forward, trying to calm him down. Taunting John Wick had been juvenile—possibly even suicidal—but in this moment, balanced between life and death and ruin, Santino could not begin to care. He smiled.

Once, his mother had called a smile an omega’s last line of defense: de-escalation, she used to preach, just be calm. Santino and Gianna had watched her die, choking on her goddamned calm. Their father had thought—incorrectly, as it turned out—that she had cheated on him, and their mother’s own bodyguard had shot her in the chest, point blank, over the kitchen table. It had been an early and valuable lesson in trust and power.

“Shit. Kai said you were a kid, but you really are fuckin’ young.”

    “Where’s Kai?”

“Workin’, if he knows what’s good for him.” The stranger sat in an easy sprawl at the bench, at arm’s reach, his elbows pressed over his knees. “All right, kid. Where the hell did you steal those gems from?”

    “You’re Kai’s boss?” Akira hazarded a guess.

    “Answer the question.”

“Why should I? I don’t know who you are. You could be an undercover cop.”

“Heh. Kai was right about that too. You’ve got some fuckin’ balls.” The stranger held out a hand. “Iwai. Kai’s boss.”

    Summary

John woke up to Daisy whining in his ear and an armful of grumpy mafioso poking him in the ribs, still half-asleep. “Your fucking dog,” Santino growled, and pulled the covers over his head. John got out of bed, yawning, and followed Daisy out of the bedroom through to Santino’s lavish private chambers. They dodged sculptures and antique furniture to the door, feet and paws sinking into plush carpeting.

Outside, one of the duty guards raised an eyebrow when Daisy shot out, scrambling to the stairs. Still yawning, John followed her out, PJs riding low on his hips as he got her to the verandah. The sun was just rising. Daisy returned, looking relieved, and they headed back at a more sedate clip, Daisy curling up on an armchair while John retreated back to the bed.

Santino cursed him in Italian when John burrowed under the sheets. “It’s ‘bout seven in the a.m.,” John said, merciless. “Rise and shine.”

    Summary

To John’s surprise, Winston sighed and closed his eyes briefly, his hands clasped over his perfectly pressed trousers. The master of New York’s Continental was an amiable man, at least on the surface, and although the years had cut seams into his face and peppered his hair with silver threads, he was still a man of precision and consequence. One of the few men whose opinions John still valued.

“You don’t approve,” John said, when the silence stretched his patience thin. Winston’s elegant study in the Continental was drawn in shades of mahogany and oak and velvet, where books, never read, lined wall shelves with their stitched leather spines. The only books of consequence in the study were kept in the thrice-locked desk, ledgers that tallied lives and deaths. And oaths.

“It is not my place to approve or disapprove, Mister Wick,” Winston said.

“D’Antonio said he’d only do this for me if I gave him a marker.”

    Summary

The rock garden on the fifth floor of the Kantei was meant to be a place where one could sense a delicate “Japanese spirit”, according to the tourist guides. Iwai Munehisa had been Captain of Section 1 for five years and part of the general Security Police for longer, and he still couldn’t see it. As far as he was concerned, the rock garden served mostly to be a pain in his ass.

The new Prime Minister, Kurusu Akira, liked to sit near the garden and think, hands clasped over his lap, long legs stretched close to the raked pebbles. He also liked having the rooftop open. Iwai tended to watch the sky, thinking of everything that could go wrong with drones and worse, just so that the incoming sunlight could give the goddamned rocks a pretty sparkly effect. Fuck architects.

“Third one this month,” Tsuda said, as they watched the others cut the hanged man down. Iwai nodded, distracted as he lighted a cigarette, waiting for the nicotine to relax him before bothering with an answer.

Kumicho wants the killer found quick. Been breathin’ down my neck.” That was an understatement. The Boss lost his temper rarely, and the morning had been an uncomfortable exception as he gave Iwai a very loud piece of his mind. It wasn’t just bad for optics: anyone wanting to muscle in on Iwai’s position knew they just had to find their resident yakuza hunter to have it.

Warm fingers caught Akira’s wrists as he flinched and hauled him forward, out of sight of the main street. Iwai scowled at him, the lollipop stick in his mouth twisting to the corner. “Tch. What are you doin’ here?”

“How did you know I was there?” Akira countered. Even in a dank, dim alley, Iwai commanded Akira’s attention like little else could: he was unselfconsciously handsome, though that wasn’t what had drawn Akira’s eye the first time—it was the danger Iwai wore, without even meaning to. Even his forbidding scowl just felt like another challenge.

“I heard that noisy cat of yours.” Iwai let him go. “Aren’t you too young for this part of town?”

“Not gettin’ right to the point? Kinda unlike you.”

Akira shrugged. “All right then. I’m eighteen now and want to have sex,” he said blithely, and just as Iwai started choking on his lollipop, added, “with a guy. So–”

“Wait, wait, waitwait,” Iwai yelped, coughing.

“I thought you might know an appropriate contact.”

    “What.” How had the kid—

“Doesn’t the yakuza take protection money from escort agencies?” Akira asked mildly. “I don’t want an agency involved with trafficking though.”

“Oh.” Iwai rubbed a hand slowly over his face. “Fuckin’ hell. I can’t believe. You just. Dropped that in my lap out of fuckin’ nowhere. You’ve got some balls, kid.”

“Who are you?” Graves demanded hoarsely.

“I’m Newt. Scamander. Err. Pleased to meet you. I mean, I would’ve been pleased to meet you, under normal circumstances.”

“Scamander.” Graves frowned to himself. For someone who was supposedly in a bad rut, he seemed perfectly in control. “Your accent, it’s British. Any relation to Theseus Scamander? Head of the DMLE?”

    “I’m his younger brother.”

    “Are you an Auror?”

    “No. I’m a magizoologist.”

Graves exhaled, exasperated. “A what? Is this a rescue or are you a hostage?”

    “Sort of neither,” Newt admitted.

“I give up,” Tony complained, from the vicinity of Steve’s lap. “I don’t know what you want for Christmas. So. How about you give me an itemised list of three to five things? Another motorcycle? Stronger hair gel? A nicer costume in black and orange?”

Steve frowned down at him, his lips pressed thin, a clear sign that Tony had, yet again, Put His Foot In It. “That’s not how Christmas works.”

“Well it should work that way,” Tony said defensively. “It’s more efficient. Saves everyone a lot of time. Remember when you freaked the fuck out after I tried to give you a house?”

    Anyone would have ‘freaked out’.”

“Google told me otherwise,” Tony said sadly. Google tended to lie so much recently.

Despite later claims by Porpentina Goldstein, the first thing that Newt Scamander, illegal magizoologist, actually said to Graves was “Oh. I really didn’t think that there were two of those.”

Graves looked around quickly, wand cautiously raised. One of Grindelwald’s ‘silos’ of stored and mostly illegal paraphernalia had turned out to also include an acid-spitting two-legged ostrich-sized lizard, whose spit had dissolved, unfortunately, much of said illegal paraphernalia, a desk, several chairs, and Newt’s clothes. The lizard was asleep, bubbling gently beside the stairs, clutching the virulently pink flower bulb that Newt had thrown at it right before he’d been drenched.

    “Where’s the other one?”

“No, no, I meant your coat,” Newt explained brightly.

Percival managed not to grimace, but Seraphina’s eyes narrowed. Behind her were two groups of Fifths: a pack of three gangly Serpent boys whom Percival knew as pranksters, and a fourth whom he didn’t recognise, a pretty boy with a Thunderbird badge. The kid was gangly and tall, though hunched in on himself, freckled, with unruly ginger hair, and he was staring at his feet, as though resigned to his fate.

    “What happened?” Percival inquired carefully.

“A stupid Fifth prank.” Seraphina supplied. “On the new Thunderbird transfer. Out of Hogwarts?” she elaborated, when Percival raised his eyebrows.

Ah yes, that’s right. Thunderbird’s Head, Kara Miranda, had mentioned something along those lines as a footnote in his last briefing. “What kind of prank?”

Seraphina’s lip curled. “Does it matter?”

“It matters to me,” Percival shot back evenly.

“You don’t write, you don’t call,” an annoyingly familiar voice drawled from behind Illya, “and whenever we actually do meet, you try to kill me. You’ll hurt my feelings, sweetheart.”

Illya pivoted, a snarl curling at his lips. Napoleon stood close to the roof vent, in his current chosen form: a fairly tall human male, handsome and broad-shouldered, with slicked dark hair and a lazy, beckoning smile, dressed in a sharply fashionable suit tapered down at his hips, so dark that the fabric seemed to ripple against the night sky, like an angular gash in prime reality.

Napoleon sighed as Illya lunged, sidestepping at the last moment, then the air distorted as Illya snapped the haft of the spear around, catching nothing. Napoleon reappeared on the edge of the building, balancing on his heels; from his shoulders unfurled great, ink-dark wings that were as empty as his suit against the sky, neither feathers nor furled leather. His gaze lingered over Illya’s wings, a look of pure avarice.

“We could put the word out,” Jack said slowly, though he knew how that would go. Ana was already grimacing. If they were outside, she probably would’ve spat in the dust.

“Like to see you get that past the CO.”

“I’ll talk to him,” Jack began automatically, then paused. “You talk to him. You’re second in command of Overwatch.”

“He’s never listened to me and you know it.” Ana tugged at her beret, adjusting it, a nervous habit. Her coat was a muddy brown at the hem, worn loose over her combat suit, her rifle slung over her back. Her thick dark hair, worn loose over her shoulders, was gray with dust, and she looked exhausted. Operation Eidolon was only in its third day, but it was starting to take its toll.

“Get some shut eye,” Jack told her. “I’ll talk to Gabe.”
