Summary
Dear Lord, he thinks, is this what I’ve come to? In the old days, at least a man could get his cock sucked without engaging in confrontation. Camille seems compliant enough—more than compliant, actually; his affect usually suggests that he would like nothing more than to accommodate you. But then you’re wrong: you somehow find yourself outwitted and humiliated. It’s the same with Lucile. There should be a law against it.

Summary
The suggestion of sandwiches had occurred to Lord Peter in a flash of inspiration, as he considered the awkwardness of a formal supper. He had met Harriet so often on neutral ground—in the best restaurants in London, they had conversed pleasantly but dispassionately, his own voice ringing hollow with forced jocundity. But here, in his house, they could hardly sit across from one another at a table covered by a spotless white tablecloth, where all passion came to expire under the crushing yoke of polite conversation.

Summary
A terribly awkward situation, of course. A breach of professional etiquette. Carson would be scandalized. But he wasn’t here, and there was a frightened and lonely young woman in front of her, separated by an ocean from everything familiar to her and married into a great family who seemed to speak their own language, one they did not deign to share with her and which she could not hope to interpret.
