    Summary

Steve Rogers has lived for entirely too long—long enough to see the world's end. The heroes are gone, and the Earth is pushing what's left of mankind towards the exit.

But when a makeshift team rises from the ashes, when a mysterious presence all but drags Steve there, he begins to think there may be hope yet. As they shoot for the stars one last time, Steve will get proof yet again that the future is nothing if not an echo of the past.

    Summary

It all ran together. Maybe it had been running together for a long time. He kind of lost track of it after a while; he had a little tablet in his room that would show him a calendar, some news, the weather. He didn't even look at the calendar, though. Calendars were for people who had something to expect, some event in their future to look forward to. Either he'd forgotten what that was like, or he'd never known in the first place.

There had been a moment, in the water with Steve -- the first time or the second, he wasn't sure -- where his wet gear and Steve's dead weight had dragged them both down. They had rested together in the swirling silt at the bottom of the river, and Bucky had looked up through the water and the falling debris and seen the hazy light of the sky shining through.

It had been strange. Everything happening around them, but this moment of silence and stillness. Sometimes the feeling Bucky had now reminded him of that.

    Summary

Steve had been all of nineteen years old, frustrated with the obvious pretense of dominating Bucky when he barely came up to Bucky’s shoulder, even though they both desperately wanted it to work. He’d snapped, “This is stupid, Buck! I couldn’t really boss you around when you were six years old!”

Bucky, without hesitation, had said, “I’ll be five, then. Come on, here, I’m five.”

He’d folded to his knees and looked up at Steve for the first time with Jamesy’s eyes, spoke for the first time with Jamesy’s voice, and said, “Mister? I need somebody to look after me.”

Steve hadn’t always done the best job of it, but God, he’d tried, and he’d loved trying. He wasn’t ever going to quit trying.

This is some fantastic age play. The setup is so tense.

    Summary

"We’re alive in defiance of the law, now,” Natasha said bitterly.

“Well,” Steve said, and pushed his plate away. “We’ll just have to break in and get them.”

“Right, let’s take it from the top,” Natasha said wearily. “The Raft is a fully submersible supermax prison—“

“We can do it,” Steve said.
