I love a good fic told through articles or journal entries or tweets or anything similar, and this is so clever and so thoughtful about it all.

    Summary

Al doesn’t know what he’s doing. Not just with the new apartment, but with his life in general, and it doesn't help that his family quietly looks down on him. It feels as if they’re always waiting for him to do something spectacular, but without actually expecting it of him. They’ve given up on expecting anything of him.

Al only speaks English, and he sings in the shower, badly. He likes tea, and he cleans when he’s stressed. He sees a therapist. He has a total of two friends, and one of them is his cousin. He isn’t smart; he’s simple.

He wishes that could be enough.

This hits a lot of really specific narrative things that get me in the heart every time, so I'm saving this on a reread because if I cry both times I've read it, I will probably want to read it again the next time I need some catharsis.

    Summary

Jack looks at her and then puts her luggage down and leans in, grabs her into a full-body hug, right there on the sidewalk, holding her so close. She can’t remember when he last hugged her this hard. “He told his parents. About being gay. About us,” he says into her shoulder. “They were awful.”

Had to hunt this down just now so I may as well save it, because it's beautiful every time. Alicia and parenting and all the very very weighty things that parenting sometimes means.

Finally bookmarking this after a whole spring of reading it! One of the more thrilling and heart-touching romances I've read in recent years, with the bonus of being in space with solid worldbuilding and a plot that had me on the edge of my seat multiple times.

    Summary

Grandmother ruled Gir Niajra, and always had.

Jummai felt certain this was so, mostly because it was impossible to imagine otherwise: anyone, anyone at all, seated so comfortably on that great golden throne except Grandmother? Anyone who could look or speak with such authority, to whom so many great and worthy people bowed down? No—only Grandmother. It had always been Grandmother, and it always would be.

Then Grandmother died; and there was a war.

(Or: Jummai is a princess without a throne—but she has no intention of leaving to others what is rightfully hers. She needs a wife with an army, and gets one; but her wife seems impervious to her tactical charm, she keeps making mistakes, and her cousin still wants her dead.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

An absolutely beautiful story with an arranged marriage romance, but more importantly a heroine (and other characters) I would have happily spent thousands and thousands more words with and a vividly built world that felt completely real.
