Derek doesn’t know how Stiles always does this every time they have to work together: he gets Derek caught up in these ridiculous, circular conversations and Derek finds himself arguing over inconsequential things that he doesn’t actually feel that strongly about. It’s like Stiles has an innate ability to bring Derek down to his level of immaturity.

In fairness, it was Stiles' idea to go looking for a dead body in the woods that one time, so it's not like he's known for making the best decisions.
This, though... this is spiraling out of control.

He doesn't sleep much, but he doesn't really need to sleep, or eat, any more. He's lost weight, he knows it - (sometimes Sandy, his coworker, who shows up to shifts at least ten minutes before him, without fail, comments on him looking like some tragic heroine) - and he has dark shadows under his eyes. Occasionally, after a big night, he calls in sick, because he feels like shit.
The depression, the aching loneliness, the longing for home - that's the reason he doesn't work morning shifts. The comedown wears off after a bit, but he's waiting for the moment when it doesn't and all he needs is another hit.
He thinks that'll be the final straw; that's when he finally gets himself some help.
He doesn't.

Unfortunately, he doesn't have a choice. The betas tried a magical remedy for Derek's melancholy, and now Stiles has a three-year-old who looks like Derek. Stiles doesn't know how to deal with that, and he definitely doesn't know how to tell the betas he and Derek were secret fuck buddies for a year and a half.
