    Summary

The war with Earth has been over for sweeps, and as part of the numerous peace treaties, the trolls have returned many of the captured humans to their home world. But there are those who remain upon Alternia's surface, those who had nobody to ask for them by name, who are sold into slavery and worse still.

At the age of eighteen, Rose is finally given a placement: at the hive of one Kanaya Maryam.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is an extraordinarily impressive fic in many ways--the concept of Alternian slavery isn't unique, but it's easy to end up in hopelessly depressing darkfic or, worse yet, a squicky whitewashing that never acknowledges just how fundamentally broken the entire situation is.

This story strikes a flawless balance; carefully wringing out and collecting every last drop of optimism--and there isn't much--from an irrevocably bad situation that the characters will never be able to change. The characters are not only believable, but true to canon in so many ways that the differences cut even deeper.

Most striking of all is probably the ending--it's a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to a fic where it's all too clear that a conventional "happy ending" isn't something that can happen.

Dave never asked to be part of the Brady Bunch. This whole 'normal' thing is harshing his groove, really getting his non-ironic goat. John, of course, is delighted. (Post-game slice of life fic, cheerfully assumes a happy ending.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is almost certainly my favorite "restored Earth post-game" fic. The depth of characterization the kids have here is excellent--they've been allowed to grow into a "normal" life, with interests and quirks that are believable, but still clearly showing the ways the game influenced and changed them.

The gentle reminders of the trolls are particularly nice. The story neither pretends they didn't exist, nor fixates on them excessively, and it's both sad and heartwarming whenever the kids recall those brief friendships forged in the hell the game put them all through.

I particularly adore the way Jade is portrayed here. Out of all the kids she probably had the heaviest burdens before the game: No family besides Bec, not knowing how her Grandpa died, seeing her dream self's body, always keeping track of her dreams of Skaia in order to help her friends, and so on. It's tricky to extrapolate what she'd be like without all that hanging over her, but this story does so in a persuasive, engaging way.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This was one of the first Homestuck fics I read that really impressed me, and I think it holds up well. A few bits here and there feel a bit off in light of later developments in canon, but I suppose that's an inevitable risk when writing fanfic based on an as-yet-unfinished story.
