Being a super spy was hard.
Clint knew it was hard for everybody, but it was especially difficult for him. Because of his irregular recruitment and specialized skills, Clint was able to coast through the basics of SHIELD without too much trouble. He could shoot and fight and that was what they wanted him to do. He was positioned in a perch high above the target, given orders on who to shoot, and he shot them. It was that simple. No more, no less. Occasionally he had problems following orders- especially if they were written- and it landed him with insubordination marks against his name, but in the end things worked out. He may piss off a few handlers here and there, but overall he managed. They believed it was just his attitude. He felt ‘bad attitude’ was preferable of an opinion than them knowing the truth.
And the truth was that Clint was barely literate.

Patrick, though not exactly fascinated by the paranormal, unexplainable, and cryptozoological, did, in fact have a PhD in Genetics but a blacklisting from all the best genetics labs due to an unfortunate incident where he maybe, sorta, kinda didn’t like one of his professors his final year of graduate school showing a ‘special’ interest in him. At the time, refusing to suck his professor’s dick seemed like the only sane thing to do. However, when he found his reputation already ruined as soon as he graduated, he wondered if it would’ve really been that bad to blow an old guy if it meant being able to actually find employment.

When an accident on stage leaves Tommy suffering from retrograde amnesia, he wakes up with no memory of the last two years of his life. He has no memory of being on tour, no memory of being famous, doesn't know any of his bandmates...and has no memory of being engaged to marry Adam on Halloween. With no guarantee of his memory returning, Tommy returns to his life as normal with hopes that going about his normal routines, as guided by Adam, will help him regain his memory. Adam, though upset by Tommy's memory loss, is just happy that Tommy is alive.

However, his family is under the assumption that Phil has a committed, loving relationship with a man he works with. No matter what lies he tries to tell about how 'busy' his partner is, nobody is buying it. The only way Phil canp rove to them that he isn't sad and single is to bring his partner along for the wedding.
... the partner that doesn't actually exist.
When the times comes, Phil has to find someone to pretend to be his partner convincingly. Working at SHIELD doesn't exactly offer the most choice for someone to convincingly sell a relationship to his family with. When Phil is faced with only one option, he finds himself in a situation he wanted to avoid at all costs: falsifying a relationship with the one man he actually has been hiding his feelings for at work for years.
