Summary
James Barnes stares at himself in the mirror. His mouth forms the shape of his name. Repeats it over and over, tries to remember what it was like when it was his. Before being Yakov. (He was born in Indiana. He was born to parents in Leningrad. His family is all dead either way.) They all tell him he's safe here. The Soviet Union can no longer touch him, all safeguards and kill switches have been removed. He's American just like he used to be, they say.

Summary
Stephanie watches the world move past her as the train cuts through Eastern Europe. It's winter now, there is snow on the ground. When she landed in London it was summer. She had nothing but some money and a bag of clothes, the shield was abandoned in New York, too obvious to carry around. She has a rough plan but she doesn't really know what she's doing, not really but it's not her first time disappearing to find Bucky on a whisper of hope.

Summary
Bucky makes his way into the kitchen. He feels tired and slow, worn out from the last mission even after eight hours of sleep. Steve hadn't been there when he'd crashed into bed and Bucky wasn't sure he'd be there when he woke up. Captain America didn't really have a schedule.
Except Steve is there, humming along to softly playing music, wearing some faded old sweats and an army t-shirt. The sun is dipping below the horizon and everything is warm and gold.

Summary
"Your usual, sir?" Bucky drawls, already turning for the whiskey.
"Yea." Steve licks his lips nervously, hoping he's not staring too much as Bucky's too tight shirt pulls over his shoulders and back.
"I uh I missed you," Bucky says quietly, leaning in close as he pours the drink. "This morning. You ditched."

Summary
He feels the bed shift as Steve moves, and a hand touches his cheek. They've been playing with this, soft touches and nervous kisses. But they're still figuring out the lines between partners and lovers. "You look like shit."
"Thanks. Now fuck off unless you can superhero up some ibuprofen."

Summary
The doctors say he's probably around twenty seven, twenty eight, based on the limited time he had out of cryo though the lines on his his face speak a different story, too many lives for anyone to lead. Steve bites his tongue while they tut over the science. They say he should be older if he enlisted at eighteen. Fury gives Steve knowing that Steve is hiding something, and he can give a damn good guess as to what
Fury finally says it doesn't matter, as long as he's healthy the details don't matter. As long as he's useful, is what's said between the lines.
The doctors say he's as healthy as he could be. They say his memories should come back on their own. They say. They say. They say.

Summary
SHIELD flies in Peggy from her quiet life outside of London. They ask her about the man they found wrapped in red white and blue. She doesn't have much to tell them. James Barnes is broken and even as two men, he is less then. He looks at Peggy and sees the young woman, he asks about the war as if it is happening now.
He asks about a promise for a date and she can only smile tightly and say we'll see, Captain. We'll see.
And he understands because he's late, and a real lady doesn't forgive tardiness.

Summary
Carol leans against the still newspapered door and watches her friend turn slowly in a circle. The space feels big and empty. It's only broken up by support pillars and a broken partition from when there was an office in there. And Steve Rogers right in the middle.
"This is crazy Carol," Steve says. She can tell he's doing his best to keep his voice neutral, he's not very good at hiding his emotions.
"Yea, well," she shrugs, not really having an argument against it. "If you don't want to be part of it, I get it. Really I do."

Summary
"I miss you."
"I've barely left your side." Steve hopes Bucky can hear his smile. He reaches for his hand and rests his lips against his palm so he can at least feel it.
"Yea but…"
But it's not the same. Steve knows it too though he hates to admit it. It hasn't been the same since the last mission

Summary
Identity is a fickle business in their work. Names get passed down and repeated and changed. Natasha has at least ten passports all with a different name, with different lives. She used to know each as well as she knew herself or maybe she was only one more name on a passport.
Maybe Natasha is no different the Claire or Lana or Magdalena. Maybe Natasha is no one. A made up identity.

Summary
Someone, probably the General since he said pithy things like that, someone told him once that war is hell. It was definitely the General. He looked at Bucky like he regretted every damn thing about him, as if somehow Bucky was all his fault. And then he said it. War is hell.
Then he shook his head and dismissed him.
Bucky didn't think anything of it. The General was an old man and Bucky was young, about to head into his greatest adventure. Not even the train full of clowns and poison could slow him down, not really. He got his first kill behind him and was ready to face an army that carried Death with them.

Summary
Steve waves down one of the bartenders and orders, considers ordering two drinks but decides to hold off. Maybe Bucky's just in the bathroom, maybe he's tucked away in a corner and Steve's just missed him. He does another sweep of the room just in case but doesn't see him.
Maybe he's early. Steve has always had a habit of showing up early, but so did Bucky.

Summary
"You ready?" Steve murmurs.
Bucky twists around onto his back so Steve's lips hover over his stomach. He slides back up to catch Bucky's mouth in a lazy kiss. "Ready to go be heroes?" Bucky sighs. His fingers curl around the nape of Steve's neck, just holding him close. "Yea, I'm ready."

Summary
When they get home, Yulian runs up the stairs ahead of him, talking excitedly about seeing Captain America and Falcon and War Machine and Valkyrie on her great big horse. Others that he can't name, but Yulian knows who they and what they can do. He almost runs into their neighbor coming down the other way.
"Sorry about him," Bucky grins, ruffling Yulian's hair, red like his mother's.
Steve Rogers grins. "It's no problem. Guess he enjoyed the parade?"
