Her first step is in a meadow. She won't remember it. Who remembers their first step after all? Tremulous. Toddling. Toppling. Plop the wee distance of tiny chubby legs on soft green blades of grass that bend at the blow. She falls. All children fall.

She does not so much rise again, as grow.

I was a highwayman, on the coach road I did ride.
I was a sailor, born upon the tide.
I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide.
I fly a starship across the universe divide.

Reaching the other side to become a single drop of rain.
I'll be back again, and again, and again.

    Summary

Ash came into this world in an Ash tree.

Not literally, of course. Her mama didn't give birth to her while crouching up in a tree. She wasn't a bird. No Ash's mama just left Ash in the crotch of a tree by the ferry station in Tiburon sometime in the middle of the night. Leastwise she'd been well wrapped and hadn't even made a peep until the mule team pulling the morning's milk delivery started making their own ruckus.

Edouard Gurun was born in a castle. This sounded a great deal more impressive than it actually was. This castle was nine years old when he was born. It was made of cement that had been shaped to look like stone and mortar and then painted with yellow paint. Here and there were tiles that that depicted pictures of lumps of gold and the gingerbread was picked out in gold. This was the castle on Nob hill that gold and railroads had built.

    Summary

In an alternative European renaissance, where princes keep vampires as servants, the British Isle has been split into two kingdoms. In the South, Queen Mary rules an England in turmoil. Fearful for her unborn child, she increasingly obeys the whispers of the stone mirror on her wall. While in the North, Queen Elizabeth juggles suitors, the undead and preventing the apocalypse. Each night, Elizabeth dreams of the end of the world. Dreams she shares with four people scattered across Europe: a psychic lost in the present, an undead Crusader, an Aztec priestess and a teenage vampire. Elizabeth struggles to understand how she can save a world that's shaking itself apart.

This isn't about them. This is about all the people on the sidelines.

At Runnymede, she played a different game.
