    Summary

Kongming looked at her and did not love her, but he respected her enough that he would rather not see her bruised and broken. Though nothing she would ever say would change his mind regarding any of his beliefs and opinions, he respected her enough to understand that she had wishes and desires and thoughts of her own, all of which had nothing to do with him. He looked at her like she was a person, wholly within herself.

What luck Yueying had, to have found Kongming; to have found a man who looked at her and did not mind that she did not exist merely to serve him.

Yueying had been taught: she was born with wrists too weak for swords and a mind suited only for the cleverness of wives, and she should never strive for anything more. Kongming knew: without frame and without brace, the spine would only break in a coming storm.

Subtitled: “A Treatise on the Cages Made from Confucian Gender and Class Roles, With Special Emphasis on Privilege.”

Sequel to both like sleeves, like limbs and for husband, for king. Please read those first, or the plot won’t make much sense. The series link is below.

    Summary

“I watched you during these months of tenuous peace. You are so used to war, Ah Hu-ge; you have shaped and carved your mind and hands and feet for its sake. But you try so hard, harder than anyone else, to fit yourself into this new world of peace, even though you had never once allowed yourself to imagine it possible.”

Xuehu, Fei’er, and Lanquan in the aftermath of a failed coup, and an attempt for peace. (A three-legged desk always risks unevenness and instability, so there is one more, too.)

    Summary

He looked down at his hands. The words that came to him before he succumbed rose again:

I can’t, my lord. I can’t, for my hands are too small and my wrists too weak to hold onto both the weight of my office and the width of his body.

His breath hitched. “What use is an officer,” he said finally, “who cannot stand beside you, my lord, due to the failings and needs of their body?”

Legends and myths are made for the grand, great men; the heroes whose tales and feats are recorded in history. For the seconds of those men, they must make do with sacrifices, with smaller deeds.

    Summary

Guan Yu was a lie; Guan Yu did not exist. There was only Yunchang, little more than the shell of a body that did not fit and could not be. Honour and duty had caged him but he had never once cast himself into full-dark; his hands were wrapped around the bars, imprinting the feel of their solidity to his bones even as he stared outside.

This was what he knew: Cao Cao wanted Guan Yu, for the warrior was a useful chess piece. Only Guan Yu’s wings were considered beautiful enough that, when torn and dried, they were considered worthy enough to decorate the web that the spider constantly wove.

They said: omegas are best as concubines, rarely worthy of being wives. They said: bodies like theirs belong far from the battlefield.

Guan Yunchang held honour and duty and pride close and tight, and so knew extent of his lies. Cao Mengde, however, understood the vulnerability of ink, and how water could wear through even the strongest stone.

    Summary

[...] we very often wish that Mr. Jefferson was here, supposing that he would be indulgent to the exertions of two little women to please him, who are extremely vain of the pleasure of being permitted to write to him, and very happy to have some share of his favorable opinion.
Angelica Schuyler Church to Thomas Jefferson, 21 July 1788

Three meetings between Angelica and Jefferson in Paris, nearing the end of the eighteenth century. And, further downstage: Sally Hemings.

    Summary

Chinese title: 賠了将军又折兵 (to lose the general and cripple the army)

Guan Yu was dressed in nylon-spun cloth, a sharp contrast to the Earth-woven silk that draped around Mengde’s own wrists. There was blood on his face but no wounds. His lips, Mengde noticed, would be plush if not for the thin line he had made them into; a sign of rebellion incongruous to his bowed head. The skin on the back of his neck, peeking through his sweeping tail of hair, was stained with a streak of red brighter than drying blood. Slick like oil, and just as unnatural against his fury-pale skin.

Laid there beside his knees was an offering much like Guan Yu himself: his famous long glaive, the peach wood - from the same tree under which he had made his vows to Liu Bei - broken, splinters shining dull under the white light of the ship.

Guan Yu and Cao Cao in space. Plot and side characters taken from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with special relevance to the Red Cliff episode.

    Summary

The Force equalised all. The Force took no sides. Baze knew all that.

But Baze had learned from Ah Qi long ago: service must be repaid. If not, then those who served had no recourse but to be helpless fools.

    And Chirrut was no fool.

The twisting darkness of devotion; the strangling desperation of faith. Baze and Chirrut through the years.

(What does it truly mean to go where he goes? The answer: intense co-dependency.)

    Summary

But it was not the way the child walked that made her grip the handle of her fan until the ivory pressed against her bones through skin and flesh. It was the child’s eyes.

They were wide, and blank, and staring straight ahead, unfocused. They were the precise shape and colour of her father’s; of her own.

A story of a mistress and her slave. A story of sisterhood.

    Summary

Reaching out, Baze took Chirrut’s hand. He pressed it over his heart and said, stumbling and halting in Cantonese, “Can’t you feel my heart beating in tandem with yours?”

Chirrut’s fingers curled inwards, nails scraping over Baze’s black robes. He stepped closer, and his face tucked into the crook of Baze’s neck.

    He said, “It isn’t enough.”

Words on their bones kept distance between them. Their city fell apart, again and again.

But they would learn to stand amidst the clouds, nonetheless: first on the unsteady wings of swallows, then with wings of their own making.

    Summary

The ink on the contract had barely dried and Jefferson was lingering at the door. Angelica had taken her to a corner. Her calluses rasping over Sally’s cheek, she had murmured, “You deserve a reward,” with soft heat coiled tight around her tongue and breath ghosting over Sally’s ear.

“No,” Sally had told her then. Her fingertips had trembled over Angelica’s lips, her heart wrenching at the sight of that pride and desire wrapped up in night-dark eyes, turned towards her. “Not yet.”

    Summary

Thomas was playing the role of a wife, taking liberties that were not his and fitted ill in his tanned hands. But his hands were paler now, and he had given his body in return, so surely it was a fair trade. Surely this was not theft.

One morning, Thomas Jefferson woke up in Dolley Madison’s body, and she in his. The year was 1801.

    Summary

‘Charlie’ was for his family, before he became a disappointment; ‘Charles’ for after he transmogrified. ‘Ben’ was meant for the club, and then Madison took it and coiled his tongue around the sound to make it his own. He hadn’t been an ‘Adams’ in years.

There was not a single name left in his hands that had not been dirtied somehow, filled with the stench of memories from the deep swamp he had tried to bury them all in.

    Summary

In Monticello, there was a ghost, and James knew her. She had brown eyes and burnt-sienna curls, a cackling laugh too loud to be polite, and long fingers that looked strange against her petite figure. She had a grace unmatched, half-danced more than she walked, and she would twirl in the middle of the street just because she felt like it. When she smiled…

So we just hold on fast / Acknowledge the past / As lessons exquisitely crafted / Painstakingly drafted / To carve us as instruments / That play the music of life.

Once, there was a revolution that started for the sake of one man. But revolutions do not end after a day; a country could not be rebuilt based on changing a single law.

Still, this revolution is led by those who have looked upon history and learned from it; by those who looked upon the faces of those who suffered and said, no more. And so change comes: slow, halting, meeting with obstacles every turn, but utterly inexorable.
