    Summary

History books would not remember Gaius’ death precipitating the greatest war Albion had ever seen. That blame rested entirely on the shoulders of an inexperienced sorcerer and the Prince whom he’d lied to a hundred times over. Future!fic with a time travel twist. Inspired and loosely based on Disney's The Sword in the Stone. General spoilers for the first half of season two.

This is one of the earliest (possibly the first) genderswap fics in the Merlin fandom and it is well worth the read. There is little to no pronoun confusion (that is, Merlin is not suddenly thinking of himself as a girl and those who know who he is continue to refer to him as if he were male), the characterizations are delightful, and the smut is quite hot.

    Summary

Arthur's a bit dim and a prank goes horribly awry, but in the end this works out to the benefit of all involved.

Anyone who's ever seen even a single episode of this series knows that it's blatantly ridiculous how Arthur never notices anything when it comes to The Secret. Inevitably someone had to write that story where Arthur does realize something is up. Except, of course, he draws all the wrong conclusions (or does he?). And is really a bit of an oblivious prat. I love this story with a vengeance!

A fabulous coming of age story that explores both some of the interesting possibilities regarding Merlin's magic as well as the strength of his friendship with Arthur. The depth of thought put into this piece, I feel, is tangible—and if the author didn't put a heck of a lot of thought into it, then I want to steal her muse!

Oh, boys. This story is so sweet and real that I knew I would have to rec it before I even finished it. Although Arthur and Merlin are in an already established sexual relationship, it is all still new enough that they're both a little insecure about sharing themselves fully, leaving plenty of room for (delicious) misunderstandings.

Whenever anyone requests recommendations for a good Modern AU, this story is always at the top of the list—and for excellent reason. This story is funny and sweet and tragic and everything one could want in a romance. Moreover, this is a mixed media work, complete with mock newspaper/magazine articles and websites. There are a handful of short sequels as well documenting some significant (and not so significant) moments of Arthur and Merlin's relationship.

    Summary

A fluffy look at a modern Merlin/Arthur relationship from Merlin's point of view.

This is positively adorable. I love how the author decided to take this stylistically. Rather than telling the story chronologically, the "moments" are mixed up so that the steadiness of the relationship varies. I feel the story makes a greater impact this way.

    Summary

It's the hottest summer in Camelot's history. Arthur is confused about what he likes, Merlin tries to help him figure it out, but neither one of them has a clue what they really want.

Cherrybina always writes porn shamefully well. This story has the added benefit of being rather long and deals with Arthur questioning his sexuality and desires in a pretty realistic way. And Merlin's so bloody helpful, but you can just tell that every time he has to encourage Arthur to go after someone not HIM he wants to go back to his room and sob into his pillow.

    Summary

"The king sent me to get you," Merlin said, with a tone that implied strongly that he wasn't rolling his eyes where Arthur could see, but just wait until his back was turned. "He said you're to get changed into formal clothes and meet him in the Great Hall, there's a delegation coming from the Summer Court."

This story reads like a fairy tale, with all the elements of something truly epic and grand: elves, politics, trials of strength and valor, and most of all love. Written prior to Season 2, it offers an intelligent and engaging theory regarding Merlin's true heritage and consequently forces his secret out into the open. Many months have passed since I first read this story and it still remains one of the most original and just plain fun reads I've had the pleasure to stumble across.

I adore stories featuring the dragon obsessing over The Epic Gay Love Story of Arthur and Merlin so very much. For that reason, this story really hits the spot for me. The fact that the dragon is writing really awful porn and keeps getting distracted by his hatred for Uther just kills me.

    Summary

Arthur is a young, promising lawyer. He needs to win his next case to get a job at the best law office in town. Of course, being Arthur, he thinks he's the best man out there. Merlin is waiting in prison for his trial. Arthur is assigned to Merlin's case as a public defender. In which there are closings, verdicts, goodbyes, and broken laws.

Wow. If you like courtroom drama, this is the story for you! The author clearly has a pretty firm grasp of the practice of law and that knowledge really shines through, granting the story quite a lot of depth. The emotions in this story also come through it's one heck of a ride!

    Summary

"How long until we know if Arthur's OK?" Merlin asked.

"A couple of months at least," Gaius replied sombrely. "Until then, you'll have to be his hands."

This is hurt/comfort the way it's meant to be done. When Arthur's hands are injured terribly, it's up to Merlin to do all the things Arthur can no longer see to without help. The depth of feeling and warm regard Merlin holds for Arthur are so very obvious in the way he approaches even the most embarrassing situations with only concern for Arthur's well-being. He doesn't tease, doesn't push—he's just there. The build up of emotion is slow and perfect.

    Summary

Sequel to The Price of Passage.

Arthur is just thinking he may go mad trying to determine what has changed in the recent past when his shoulder gives a tiny twinge and it strikes him all in a flash.

The Questing Beast. The gaps in his memory had started after he was bitten by the Questing Beast.

A lovely take on why Arthur was acting so strangely as the Second Season began.
