If you haven't read Patricia A. McKillip's Riddle-master trilogy yet, go read it. The read this beautiful (though spoilerish) postlude.

What I wrote to the author:

"I often feel hesitant to read fanfic about novels I like, and this has been my favorite fantasy novel for 37 years. I worry that the fic won't do justice to the canon.

"I needn't have worried in this case. You've captured McKillip's voice so beautifully that your story actually made clear to me for the first time some of the lyrical elements she used to enchant her readers. Thank you. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to spend a little more time with two of my favorite characters."

But if what you want is the tags that are most standard, most searchable, and/or most wrangler-friendly, here's a short guide on how to do it.

“Um,” Alex tried to regain his power of speech. “Are you Hilary?”

“Dr Aquila, I presume,” the young man answered, and leant back against the doorframe, arms folded, regarding Alex appraisingly. “So you do exist after all. I was starting to fear the personnel department was in the grip of a delusion and our rota a tissue of deceit.”

After an incident, Dr Alex Aquila is relocated to an obscure ward in a tiny hospital in the north of England. There are too many patients, too much paperwork and his SHO Hilary is impossible to work with. But at least surgical trainee Connor has shown him some friendliness. With a life to rebuild, and many challenges ahead, can Alex figure out who he is and what he really needs?

"Fluff and angst" this is correctly tagged. No knowledge of the canon is needed, but the story makes a successful AU transfer from "frontier Roman soldiers" to "frontier British doctors." I'm recommending this story for the medical details and for Hilary's dialogue, which is memorable.

    Bookmarker's Notes

A magnificent novel in the style of the original canon, with a lovely balance of dialogue, exposition, description, and action. I'm not qualified to assess how accurate the historical details are, but the tale has the flavor of novels I've read which were written during or immediately after World War II. Except for the final line - whose full impact can only be appreciated by readers who know what's coming next - the novel can be read without knowledge of the canon. I wish that Naraht would write long stories more frequently, because the results are always excellent.

If you happen to have read another book about Edward Bear, you may remember that he lived with his friends in a wood called the Hundred Acre Wood. It was a small wood, and small things happened, the kind of things that happen to bears in places where even if elevenses are late there is always a little something for tea.

    This isn't that story.

The characters from the Hundred Acre Woods are plunged into the real world. This is darkfic at its darkest, yet the odd thing was, I found the story even more heartwarming than the canon, because it reminded me that, no matter how bad things get, there is still great goodness in this world.

Prison orange is so not Kurt's color, but unfortunately that is the least of his troubles when he finds himself in a place where dropping the soap is more than just an annoyance in the shower. With no street skills and sparkly pink toenails, things aren't looking up for Kurt--especially when he's assigned to the cell of the terrifying bully who landed him in jail to begin with. But there are a lot of things for Kurt to learn about Dave Karofsky (including the fact that he knows damn well how to make you le'go his Eggo) and a lot of things for Dave to learn about Kurt Hummel (including the fact that he knows damn well how to help heal a heart.)

"'You must be Jeff Morgan,' Cruise says. 'I'd heard you'd bought our Jensen, here.' *Our Jensen.* Jensen registers the words even as he watches Jeff's eyebrows tick up slightly, showing he registered them, too, and Jensen's flash of relief at being rescued melts like spun sugar at how much worse this is, to have *Jeff*, of all people, facing off against his former master."

This enticing follow-up to Poisontaster's excellent slavefic meganovel, A Kept Boy, is a pleasant alternative to insta-fix abuse recovery stories. As Poisontaster says in the afterword to this story, "In my mind, the main arc of AKB was always the start of something, rather than Jensen (and Jeff's) story in its entirety. I don't know how much of the long ranging story will ever get written, but everything I write, I write with the awareness of that longer arc, the epiphanies and realizations and reconnections and changes that will—can—only come after years. Years of therapy, of distance, of healing, years of being in a setting that even allows you to develop, to feel, to make your own choices. Years of loving and having that love (finally) returned."
