Summary
In a universe where SBURB never existed and humans and trolls are from different parts of the same universe, the rule of the Condesce has spread to earth. Her long rule and influence had kept kindness as something that should be limited to one’s two red quadrants among trolls. When it came to everyone else it was all self interest and indifference to suffering or even enjoyment of it. Instead of culling all the humans the race was put to work and trolls were allowed to colonize the planet. Can anyone stop the Condesce? Is it even worth trying?
In exchange for the gift of life Karkat Vantas is given an unpleasant duty on the conquered Earth. Dave and his Bro had been on the run from the forces of the troll invaders. After Bro's death Dave is captured and swears hatred for all trolls. Is there anything that could ever change that? What has become his friends?
When Dave ends up in Karkat's care and witnesses how his superiors treat him will his hatred for all trolls remain or can he learn that they aren't all the same? When Karkat suffers horrendous treatment at the hands of two trolls tasked with making sure he does his job he struggles with the hopelessness of his situation. Can they ever be free again?

"And I have deduced with my masterful, scintillating intelligence that in order to get out they have quite possibly used the only way out that exists short of walking through walls. That--" you point, "--tunnel, just in the wholly unsurprising case you needed that clarified."

Summary
On the meteor, Rose, Dave, Kanaya, Terezi, and Karkat find themselves passing through a series of hooked-together dreambubbles inhabited by some utterly inexplicable grubs. Grubs that squeak and fuss and cling and chew holes in their clothes. Grubs who resemble to a distressing extent trolls whom the meteor-dwellers killed or were killed by, but essentially grubs who need someone to see to them, even in dreambubbles out of time.
