The next day, they very distinctly did not mention it. Sherlock was almost entirely certain that all he felt about that was relief.

For a genius, Sherlock sure has trouble figuring out his best friend.

Delightful! Excellent dialogue, both of them in character as they navigate misunderstood feelings and doubts, funny and sexy and Rosie is a sweetheart! Even Mycroft is perfect!

“Everything you say is important to me.” A wave of warmth seeps through me and I repress it with an equal blast of ice. I must be above such things now John has left me. Left Baker Street, I mean.

Silvergirl told me to read this, so I did, and I'm very glad. This is a beautiful piece, so well crafted, filled with gorgeous lines and heartbreaking moments. Sherlock's grief is palatable, a heavy, tender, bittersweet stone, and I love that the author allowed John to be cognizant of it and the situation. In so many fics he simply doesn't know.

    Summary

Sherlock presses his nose into my hair and inhales. “Told myself the whole way here we wasn’t gonna get into this again,” he says low. His breath moves soft against my scalp, and his words rumble deep into my bones. It sounds like the open sky throwing wind against the boulders up on Baker, rattling the thin walls of the tent with the rushing force of the mountain.

I hum. I don’t believe him for a second – steppin’ out of his gleaming white Ford back in Signal with his best shirt on and his curls all combed lookin’ up at me like he just took a breath after five years of holding it.

I know because I did the same.

I am blown away. I can't even tell you how hard this made me cry. Two tissues, then six, then eight ten twelve twenty, I cried and cried. You, dear author, have a tremendous talent. I hope you love writing as much as I loved reading your writing. I hope you know how amazing is your talent. Thank you for writing this.

You finished it, and the last two chapters are just as masterful as the first five. I love the pace you kept, and the softness of them. The newness of a relationship is so tender, fresh like buds on a tree, a ripeness you'll never get back after that initial flush. You capture that here perfectly. I love it. LOVE IT.

So what would have happened if John hadn't walked through the park and met Stamford?

What if, instead, he walked around the park and just went home?

    Bookmarker's Notes

I came to read this before reading ancientreader's story, "The Think with Feathers," and I am SO GLAD that I did. It's wonderful, so sad and humorous and uplifting and heartbreaking, and all of those things together are like the literary version of chocolate chip banana bread right out of the oven, completely addicting, and you're sad when it's gone, but you enjoyed it while it lasted SOOOO much. Okay. I'll stop now. But I did love it.
