  1. Rec 4

    Summary

"I would give anything for you to be real."

    4 Feb 2012

    Notes

I didn't bookmark this one straight after reading because I was kind of a wreck. These guys! John is the love of Rodney's life, and Rodney is John's reason for living, and why when they both know that is it so difficult? I spent the whole time wanting to fix it! But Rodney is the only one mourning for John, for good reasons all round, nobody else thinks of John as dead, especially John. And John spends the whole rest of his life just waiting for Rodney to realise. And it hurts, but the really effective way, and you unravel their reasons for feeling this way, and nobody is wrong. No one. So then you just ache for them all. And want to fix everything even if it means unravelling time. But that would break other things, so it's just achey.

But! The ending! It's the final breaking and the most painful part *and* the part that fixes it all at once.
That's the only ending it could have.
    It's a great ending.

... I just was too busy being waaaaaaaah to bookmark right away.
    *ouch*
    but a good exploration.

  2. Rec 3

    Summary

"I love you," Rodney said. "You can't die anymore."

Clones and robots and death, and how it complicates the hell out of feeling anything. Loving and grieving over and over again. Treating copies like the people they remember being, even imperfect copies.
It's more of a horror than a love story, but it's love that wins.
And Rodney... near the start I was thinking he's kind of a dick and I've read this story before, but then it kept going and he's the one I didn't end up wanting to smack. It's really well done.

  3. Rec 6

    Summary

John had stopped thinking of Mer'deth as a parasite long ago, but at some point he'd also stopped thinking of him as a passenger. Somewhere along the way, Mer'deth had become the other half of John's soul.

Oh, I like this one. Learning to love your symbiote... over again.
The slight logicstical problem in how the SGC could ever not notice is kind of answered by Kowalski and Rothman being on a gate team. No lessons learned. It's pretty elegant. So everyone is in character, and doing their best, and it's kind of ghastly in the middle but the flashback structure leads you through it. And then, ending!
It works it through and works it out lovely.

  4. Rec 15

    Summary

He's a jaded socialite who moonlights as a civilian informer for the secret police. He's a solid, desk-bound officer with a passion for following orders and chasing skirt. Together, they fight crime the free press!

AU splitting off between Diplomatic Immunity and the upcoming Captain Vorpatril's Alliance.

Ivan. Lots and lots of Ivan. He isn't comedy guy, he isn't superman, he isn't an idiot but he isn't, thank goodness, his cousins. A lot of this one is him trying to negotiate the line he has left to live in after he's avoided all the things he couldn't live with. A whole lot of it is a pickle of Barrayar. And I was almost reading it as gen, and very much liking it as that, but then the ending managed to suprise me. I'll want to read this one again later. It's a good book.
