He laughs and jokes with her on set, he teases and flirts and sends her random texts, he calls when he’s in town, she calls when she’s in town – friends do that. They are friends. It’s the best she can ever hope for, and they are friends.
Only he hadn’t even, not once during their filming a few months ago or any time since, said that he was thinking about leaving. And surely if that was the last time she’d ever film with him – he’d have told her right? A tear drips on to the paper’s surface and she brushes it away with anger burning in her chest. It’s anger, she tells herself, even though it feels remarkably like pain.

“What’s the matter then?”
“Daniel’s had to pull out of production.” David speaks shortly as Rebecca glares at him.
“It’s hardly his fault – family emergency, David, good lord.”
“Is he alright?” Alex asks with concern. They’ve only filmed a handful of scenes so far; the London carriage scene and the highwayman scene as well. Daniel was a sweet man, very polite and always professional.
“He’s fine, but he can’t possibly finish – so we have to recast. We’ve called the only other bloke we considered during auditions. It was very nearly close – but we don’t have the time to test you two. I’m sure it will be fine, he’s done a lot of plays, but not a lot of film. Name’s Smith,”

It’s Nicola’s fault.
So many things in her life are, really – and Alex is sure if she tries really really hard, even the things not Nicola’s fault can somehow still be Nicola’s fault. Alex comforts herself with the thought that – at least it’s not intentional. Nicola doesn’t realise what a basket case her sister is, and therefore probably thinks she’s helping, or being adorable, or precious – or something.
