The figure skating community is insular in a way that not many other sports are. There are countless open secrets, known between the skaters, coaches, and fans, that no-one really talks about. My sexuality used to be one of them. That Yuuri Katsuki is his own worst enemy is another.

It was talked about euphemistically, for the most part. “Nerves” and “lack of confidence” and “not yet used to the mental strain of competing”: put like that, it all sounded trivial, like he would just grow out of it. He supposedly had, when he started to win, and win consistently.

There is something a lot more severe, a lot more lasting, about the phrase “anxiety disorder”.

“Oh, well--hm. I’m not even sure I would call it a support network.”

“Yeah, not really. A twenty-four-seven service sub you didn’t ask for and fucking… fuckin’ Banksy. That’s a couple of sitcom characters, not a support network.”

VN: Da. So anyway, I take a break and go to go see if I can be the one to give Yuuri that push. I had the idea that his interpretive skill, all that charm he had when he danced or skated, could be helped by someone really taking the time to choreograph a program that highlighted his strengths. And I was right -- but I also learned that what Yuuri needed most of all was just someone who believed he could skate at the highest level. Because I still don't think he believes it himself.

Viktor: Also whatever Yuri's said about me is probably a lie
Viktor: Unless it’s that I want to talk to you, because I do )))))))
Other Yuri: everything i said is true
Other Yuri: viktor nikiforov is a giant douchebag asshole!!!!!!
Other Yuri: i take back everything i said about you calling him
Other Yuri: let him suffer ignored and alone the rest of his pathetic life

Yuuri sits shellshocked at the barrage of messages.

Before him, Celestino sighs. “Tell Phichit to go to sleep.”

    “It’s not Phichit.”

Celestino looks up from his magazine and blinks at Yuuri. Yuuri understands. Who else would be contacting him so relentlessly? His friends and family in Hasetsu possessed a modicum of chill, as Phichit would say, at least when it came to phones and social media. This blitz… possessed no chill whatsoever. None. Yuuri thinks even Phichit would be awed.

“Yuri Plisetsky and Viktor Nikiforov are messaging me the argument I think they’re having with each other about each other while likely standing right next to each other while texting me.”

Celestino stares at him a long moment, silent. Then he lifts a hand to his temple, closes his eyes, and sighs.

"If Victor wanted to abdicate," Otabek says, once there's a pause in the business of homage, "why didn't he just do it?"

"Abdicate?" Yuri sounds shocked. "You can't. I told you, that's not what--the throne has to change hands through a true challenge, or else the land gets discouraged and doesn't recognise its master, and..."

He trails off. The two of them stare for a while at Yuuri and Victor, who have their foreheads pressed together, smiling as though the rest of the world simply doesn't exist.

"I'm going to fucking kill him," Yuri hisses.
