    Bookmarker's Notes

[Spoilers up to Chapter 11 follow.]

Overall, I liked it. The worldbuilding is really good, especially on Mulan's end, and I love little details like the place which has a cult of not finding your soulmate, and the language difficulties. The timeline stuff is particularly cool for me, and made me enjoy it all the more. The flashes that we see of Elsa's childhood, and how she ties her 'broken' soulmate mark into being a witch, really made me ache for her, and considering the setting I think that the author did well with explaining (or at least handwaving in a reasonably-believable manner) the Anna/Hans and the playout of the movie plotline.

I really love Mulan's character. The relative-decline of her life post-film is dark but reasonable, the defeat of Shan Yu being so astounding that there's almost a Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx about it. She simply can't keep being that good. The portrayal of her mother's grief actually really resonated with me as well. Anna and Kristoff are great, and so are the various supporting characters that you see.

Elsa is... a bit more hit and miss for me, and with how much I love Elsa that does colour my enjoyment of the fic a bit. Her interaction with Hilde is particularly adorable, with Anna it's good, and when she's on her own it generally reads well to me; her friendship with Kristoff being portrayed as a little more tentative is totally understandable with how long before Frozen Fever this was. I'm even happy to go along with the reading of her as asexual until she meets her soulmate; it certainly works in this universe.

Two things, though, jarred with me during this read: Elsa fainting, and the line about Anna having children, in Chapter 2:
"Elsa by now has learned to close her eyes and smile against things that make her want to scream, so instead of telling Anna she’s still too much a child to have children (and it's done, after all, isn't it, no use being hurtful), she wraps Anna up in her arms."
I think it's the fainting happening twice which really bugged me, because one read as dramatic for me but two starts to make it look a bit like a pattern. (I may be biased because I've only ever fainted from heat, not shock, though I have collapsed/fallen to my knees in shock before.) The second line, though, just makes me stop and tilt my head, because the idea of Elsa wanting to keep seeing Anna as a child and being shocked that oh my god, she's old enough to have kids?! Can totally see, I have the same response to people my own age having children. But the way that it's phrased, about wanting to scream and the "it's done", makes it almost seem too much like Elsa earnestly believes it? I don't know, the line just sounded slightly off to me.

Those are really pretty small things overall in terms of my actually enjoying the fic, though, and I'm liking the fact that the soulbond doesn't automatically mean no awkwardness between them. So would recommend for plotty Disney femslash.
