    Bookmarker's Notes

This fic fits right into the dark corners of Winter Soldier & Man from U.N.C.L.E, with completely original but plausible twists to break my brain... & heart. This Illya cannot ignore or pass by the Winter Soldier or his pain. He's compelled to give the soldier whatever he has left: a new understanding of who & what the soldier can choose to be; brief moments of compassion & comfort; Illya's few remaining momentoes of a life with his lover, & the hope they represent.

The Soldier looked over, again tracing the shape of Illya’s face. “You are kind like him. But you are not him.”
“The man at the river?” Illya found himself proud. His voice had not shaken.
“He was…” The words died, twisted between accents and emotions. “I can not say.”
“You do not need to. There is always a man who was.“

Oh gods. Who could guess that Ducky's calm, urbane exterior contains such uncompromising steel & such howling emptiness? It's tragic that Dr. Mallard feels that his job at NCIS, his life in total, is pointless except for these once-in-decades chances to risk everything for another lethal lost cause. This is an unforgettable portrait of a man who gave everything--his country, love, companionship, comfort, identity, years & strength & life--to do his duty as he saw it according to his code of honor. I read it three times before I started & yet again while writing a comment, & I'm sure I'll be back several times in future.

This short ficlet introduces a new kink, AFAIK! I adore how they're so relaxed & accepting; they have that sort of easy trust & generousity that's built over time. Neither one necessarily 'gets' exactly what the other is so excited about, but each is willing to do what he can to make it better for his lover. A helluva lot of backstory & hot sexxin' in so few words!

REALLY apocalyptic, but wonderful writing & original setting & plot. Grimmer than I usually read but ends as HEA as possible.

I don't understand most of what Tony says in this (as per usual) or why Steve doesn't slap him silly in the bedroom scene (let alone outside the TV studio!), but it's a 3-hanky weeper & welcome boosterism for unions & civic virtue.

A quiet little fic about how Ilya, & a few others, were taken from Russian orphanages after WWII....
