Bookmarker's Notes
Unique tone. Well worth reading, and re-reading, and re-reading.
Thought-provoking. More importantly, emotion-provoking... literally, in Sherlock's case, but also in the case of the reader.
Superlative. I don't know if I've ever seen John and Sherlock's relationship done so truly... Learning to love and be loved, and to forgive and be forgiven, take time. NoStraightLine takes no shortcuts.

Bookmarker's Notes
...This made me feel things in a dimension I didn't know I could feel in. I... am really genuinely confused as to what emotions I just experienced, actually. I don't think I've ever...???
...I don't even know what to say. That was... indescribable, I suppose.
This must be read. By everyone.

Summary
Appalachian AU! In November 1973, Vietnam vet John Watson returns to his family's old home in Arthel County, West Virginia, deep in coal country. His low expectations include recuperation and boredom. Instead he finds a ruined landscape, a series of grisly murders, and one of the world's weirdest neighbors.
Warnings/content: Some violence. Explicit sex. Tobacco-chewing. (Not all at the same time.)
Huge thanks to beta reader bethbethbeth/Beth H!
Now COMPLETE.
Now featuring: The Bone Fiddle Fanmix! Music is the heart and the spine of this story, so here is over two hours of it. Traditional Appalachian music, period-appropriate rock, and atmospheric alt-country. All the murder ballads mentioned in the story are here.

Four spirits. Two pairs of siblings. One fate.
Simple, really.
For the title, I owe a debt of gratitude to Viktor Frankl and to his words: "What is to give light must endure burning."
