Everything Jude writes is word magic. This is just one of a handful of favorites I return to.

He is rendered in just a few deft, unwavering marks – the prominent line of his nose in profile, the odd arch of his turned foot, the dark smudge of a nipple. There’s no hesitation, as if Sherlock knows his body as well as he does his own.

    Bookmarker's Notes

662 words capture the "why" and "how" of a taboo relationship. It's not incest as kink-for-the-reader (that's its own genre), but the imagery that frames it is beautiful without apology.

It's been three years since I bookmarked this. I was doing some digital house-cleaning today and decided to dump all of my bookmarks, saving anything worthwhile to a google doc that functions as a nostalgia museum. I reread a lot of short fics, and was reminded of the profound impact some fandom writers had on the way I write and think about writing.

Fandom can be one of the best and one of the worst places to learn more about kinks and taboos (as well as how to write about kinks and taboos). Peevee's writing and rec blog "Sherlock Odd Fic" helped me find some of the best stuff.

In this continuing series of Sherlock fics that I still find enjoyable and interesting post-fandom (which is also shaping up to be a series of taboo fics): cannibalism.

This is my favorite installment of a series I still find enjoyable. Negotiating (or even failing to negotiate) difficult or taboo kinks is a favorite theme that's stuck with me beyond fandom.

"How much do you know about legends?" the man asked abruptly.

Brian shrugged. "There's lots. They involve magic."

    "No, they involve fear."

I read quite a few recommended Labyrinth fanfics the last time I went searching for a fix. This is by far my favorite.

    Summary

Years later, Charles would remember that day. Sometimes he would wonder if he could have changed anything; other times he would despair over what he had since become. But he would always hold the image in his mind: Raven, laughing, and his thoughts flying alongside her on strong wings, silver-gold through the winter air. Once upon a time.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I've been an X-Men comics fan for a long time, and this fic pretty much reigns peerless in its realization of the White Queen, Charles Xavier, and Wolverine, among others.

I don't think I've been this emotionally involved in a fic since reading bendingsignpost's AU at the height of my Sherlock fixation. And even with that comparison in mind, this might still be my favorite fanfiction. The characterization of the huge cast of characters is so consistently interesting and painstaking-- and the relationship at the center is so tangled and believably, wittingly unhealthy.

Instead of a dull, one-way trope of abuse and fantasy reconciliation (Stockholm syndrome, or worse-- the telltale signs that the author has a serious misunderstanding of sexual consent), we have two characters furiously taking turns doing unspeakable wrong to one another and, somehow, right by one another. This is the kind of complexity I live for in a fic. It's compelling enough to hold your interest from year to year as the author updates.
