After a few awkward years of high school that caused a slight rift in their friendship, Reiner began to religiously visit the cafe where Bertholdt worked in an attempt to rekindle their friendship the summer before college. But every attempt at fixing their relationship was always met with refusal, as Bertholdt feared that Reiner was simply bored and looking for something to entertain him for a few days. But as the summer drags on, and Reiner continues to show up every day, Bertholdt realizes the inconvenient feelings he had harbored for Reiner once are reignited and come summers end he finally allows Reiner the opportunity he was seeking. By this point, Reiner's realizing something rather crucial: he doesn't just want to be Bertholdt's friend now. There's something else there, and he knows damn well what it is. And so does Bertholdt.

They were welcomed home, even if they had failed their mission.
But for Reiner Braun, his home wasn't complete unless Bertholdt could be a part of it. He had killed the soldier in himself to show his love and his loyalty, but now what? How did he prove his love now that they were home?
Well clearly, it had something to do with that ring in his pocket.
Sometimes the only way Bertholdt can be by Reiner is to be his shadow.
“What the fuck are we doing, Reiner,” Bertholdt mutters, swallowing bile back down as he adjusts his hold on his best friend's leg.
“They’re hungry,” Reiner responds, damnably composed as he hacks through the last inch of flesh and skin keeping his leg part of his body. "I'm feeding them."
