I just had to come back to this fic, busy and stressed as I currently am, because it hits me, hard, in the gut—that Ray had dreams, once, and convictions, and he feels like he’s let himself fall into complacency and uselessness; that Ray has this love-hate relationship with his own image of Benton as someone perfect and motivated and untouchable, and his own image of himself as some fallen and not doing enough.

The html detailing alone is enough for me to rec this fic. Anyone whose tried doing an html-intensive story will tell you that catching that one single missing character that’s just thrown off your entry entry is painstaking work.
Oh, and the story is sweet, the (sadly brief) sex smoking hot, and Jim’s a bloody creeper. (I almost forgot to mention the story, silly me.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

’m struggling a bit to describe exactly what I like about this fic. I think it’s that sense of how real life, unintentionally or not, has a tendency to creep into your stories. Some people can manage to create stories out of research. Some people create it out of bits and pieces of real people and experiences. It’s an odd sort of thing to explain to people who don’t write (well, or draw or whatnot)—how a character can have pieces of an actual person, or a plot can have bits of a real event, but at the same time, it’s not the actual person or event. A character isn’t always what you think about another person. Sometimes characters seem to grow and react in ways even the author doesn’t expect. Perhaps the better comparison is between actors and their characters—some actors may draw on memories to bring out emotions for characters tics, but they don’t necessarily share those traits they imbue their characters with.
