"What do you think science is, at its root, but the pursuit of the spark that birthed the cosmos? We would be heretics, each and every one, were there room for heresy in truth." A conversation between Celebrimbor and Sauron in Eregion. (1,273 words)

Summary
At the beginning of the Second Age the Valar "forsook for a time the Men of Middle-earth." For those who had fought with the elves against Morgoth they created Numenor, but the rest faced a series of evil kings, culminating eventually in Sauron's domination. What might life have looked like for people in that situation?

Galadriel warns against using the Mirror as a guide because "the Mirror shows many things, and not all have yet come to pass. Some never come to be, unless those that beheld the visions turn aside from their path to prevent them. The Mirror is dangerous as a guide of deeds." It sounds like Galadriel has had bad experiences with using the Mirror "as a guide of deeds." But when?

Summary
"The Ruling Ring passed out of the knowledge even of the Wise in that age; yet it was not unmade. For Isildur would not surrender it to Elrond and Círdan who stood by. They counselled him to cast it into the fire of Orodruin nigh at hand, in which it had been forged, so that it should perish, and the power of Sauron be for ever diminished, and he should remain only as a shadow of malice in the wilderness. But Isildur refused this counsel...."

Only a Woman II by Marta

Summary
These four vignettes were inspired by the Advent themes. They focus on the four noble women of Gondor and Rohan around the time of the Ring War, and are each inspired by a candle on the Advent wreath, and by an inequality that I consider the mark of a broken world.
- In the Depths of Winter: Hope --- Arwen --- racism
- Those Who Cannot: Preparation --- Finduilas --- class inequality
- When Winter First Begins to Bite: Joy --- Eowyn --- sexism
- Strange Fates: Love --- Lothiriel --- homophobia

Summary
A pair of vignettes examining the after-effects of Isildur's refusal to destroy the ring.
- Jus ad Bellum is a character study of Elrond. It also features a cameo by Valandil (Isildur's son) and references to Maglor, Gil-Galad and Isildur.
- Jus in Bello is more political in nature. Set after Elrond's journey to Valinor, it features Gil-galad and Elrond in equal measures, and again discusses Isildur.
