    Summary

She meets her at a soda fountain in Avon-by-the-Sea, on the outskirts of Asbury Park. It's her daddy's shop and she works there in the summers. She's recently graduated, supposed to be starting at Jersey City University in the fall.

"Liberal Arts for now, I suppose," is what she says. Chris gets all of this out of her just by saying the words, "Workin’ here long?"

She wouldn't even know her name yet if not for the tag on her uniform that says Mary in blue letters.

It’s two days of sleeping and eating vending machine food and smoking like a chimney before she takes action. She thinks of Mary, probably grounded, sitting in her room with her sheets over her head like a cocoon.

She thinks about Liberal Arts and no set plan and this small fucking town with this bright girl in it.

    She drives.

This is bait, but the best bait is the truth; there is no lie in Jack's arm around her waist, in his fingers tangled through hers.

This is bait, but the best bait is the truth; there is no lie in Jack's arm around her waist, in his fingers tangled through hers. And her face has always been unguarded where Jack is concerned. She's never bothered to hide how much she wants him. It's just always been perfectly deniable, for the both of them, while she waited for him to lift the gauntlet of her desire from the floor.

Do you know what it is like, she would say, to be twenty-nine years old and trapped in your childhood room? No, the curse came before and after the dancing, not during. The curse was a locked door every night; the curse was a father who would sell his daughters for an answer; the curse was a choice between strange men’s lives and our own freedom. The curse was a soldier who would barter a stolen secret for a kingdom, for my body in his marriage-bed.

"Of course I'm the scapegoat. I'm the only one left," Claire says. And that's the problem, isn't it: she worked at that place long enough to know what happens to goats. She's breathing again, but her calm's been fractured now, and up from the depths of her comes something searing, and huge, and--

    She's angry. She's so angry.

"They're eating me alive," she says.
