“Shut the door,” Hawk said. “You getting rain all over my fine Corinthian leather.”

“Do the Corinthian cows whine about the rain,” I said. “Are there even cows in Corinth?”

“You got no appreciation for the finer things,” Hawk said. His smile gleamed through the dim interior of the car.

The strongest emotion I’d ever seen Hawk express was mild dismay. And the level of dismay was the same whether his champagne wasn’t adequately chilled or someone was pointing a gun at him.

When Rosaline is a little girl, she likes flowers and pretty things. She likes old books, with cracked leather binding, with pages filled with fairy tales or intrigues or household accounts. She likes the curve of her cousin’s smile. She likes the sound of her laugh. She likes the sound of her name. She sounds it out. Juliet. Juli-et. It rhymes with well-met, regret.

It rhymes with poetry that has not been written yet.

Rosaline is cheerful and she cups Juliet’s cheek. Juliet’s eyelashes are dark smudges on her perfect cheekbones. Juliet rhymes with not yet.

True love. Pirate treasure. Fencing. Fighting. Captures. Escapes. Life and death. Pursuing happiness.

Getting away from Humperdinck wasn't so easy after all.

This is an AU in which Buttercup was the maid of all work who became a pirate and Westley was the prince. Some of the genders of other characters have also been changed, but other than that, the world is more or less the same.

She remembered a younger Westley persuading a younger Buttercup to rub down his horse, paying her with a smile. He'd stolen apples from the orchard next door and excused himself with that same infectious grin. In those days, the sun itself would come out from behind the clouds just to view his smile. She remembered him always bathed in golden light.

She hadn't realized back then how much innocence could cost, not until she'd had to leave. She'd been innocent too.

    Summary

Once there lived a girl in a small village close to the sea. She was a diligent girl, but not one people expected much of. Her family had all passed on when she was still quite young and so she had gone into service, passing from house to house as chance would have. But her fortune was made when the local carpenter offered her a job as his housekeeper.

They put the farmer in the box, and they put the box in the ground, and they put his memory in their hearts.

But the next day the strong and fresh-faced farmer came home. The awful wound from his terrible accident was gone without a scar, and when his family asked him, quite terrified, how he was and how he came to be there, he merely said, "I don't remember. But I've never been better."
