The last thing he saw before everything went blue and dark was Scott’s red hoodie, and Stiles thought, as his limbs went shock-heavy and cold, and the bubbles started streaming around him, that he’d done something good with his life after all.

    Summary

Stiles is basically doing fine. He's surviving, anyways. So what if it's a struggle to get out of bed most days? Back in high school, everything about the supernatural had seemed edgy and romantic and exhilarating, but after seeing everything he has, wanting to go back to ignorance is only natural. Only then Derek comes back to Beacon Hills and says he's in love with him, and everything changes.

    For the worse.

    -----------------

Stiles catches himself at the last minute and blinks hard, as if that might change the fact that, yes, the person sliding onto the stool next to him is Derek Hale. He’s more than back in Beacon Hills, he’s right at Stiles’ elbow. And fuck if the unbidden reaction to that doesn't feel like a return to high school: the palpable uptick in his pulse, the anxious desire to be funnier, louder, and brighter balanced with the feeling that he’s already the best version of himself when he’s got this man’s attention on him.

Derek is smiling, his kaleidoscope hazel eyes flitting intently over Stiles’ face in a searching examination of his features. Stiles can feel his mouth pulling into a wide grin. It’s Derek. Derek’s back.

“Hey, hi,” he says. “Hey there.”

    “Stiles?”

Even hearing his voice reminds him what a bad idea this is. “Hey, Derek. Just ran into a beta who was really interested in your location. In a distinctly non-friendly way. So heads up.”

“Are you alright?” Derek asks. Even through the bad connection he sounds a little wrecked, like he’s got the gist that no, Stiles is not.

“Peachy,” Stiles lies. They breathe at each other for a moment, until he can’t take all the things they’re not saying, anymore. “How’s Winnipeg? Liking the snow?”

    “Calgary, now,” Derek corrects.

“Man, don’t tell me that,” Stiles whines. “It’s safer if I just don’t know.”

“Not safer for you, if you need me.”

Stiles snorts at that, then winces. If he needs Derek. Sure, let’s put that in the hypothetical. “I gotta go. Just wanted to warn you.” He doesn’t hang up.

“I love you,” Derek says, fast and hot like he thinks Stiles might cut him off in the middle of it. He’s not wrong.

“That’s nice,” Stiles says, in a tone that implies the opposite. He ends the call.

    Or

In which Stiles is an Emissary, Derek is in love with him, and nothing comes as easy as it should.

“So I’m doing my senior psych thesis on friendships,” Erica says, not-so-accidentally elbowing Derek in the ribs as she turns to face Stiles. “How they develop, how intimacy is fostered, stuff like that.”

“That’s cool,” Stiles says agreeably. “What’s our part?”

“Well, I can’t really tell you the point because that would influence the results. But it’s a set of 36 questions that you have to ask each other.”

“Just the two of us?” Derek chimes in, finally, and Stiles sighs.

“Okay, dude,” he says, making a face, “could you try not to look quite so offended? Like, my ego’s pretty strong, but come on, man.”

    Summary

A world without parents is a lonely, portless world with no safety and no justice - this is a truth Stiles Stilinski learned when he was very young. But at nine years old, at twelve, he couldn't understand just how true it was; that the powerful, indefinable wrongness that obscured his memories of his mother was more than a child's sense of unfairness at having his mom taken away.

It's not until a globetrotting great-aunt blows back into town after a many-years absence that it starts to dawn on him: that his mother's death was anything but natural; that it was certainly anything but fair.
