In 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart points a stolen wand at Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with the intent to Obliviate them.

The wand doesn't backfire. Gilderoy's "discovery" of the Chamber of Secrets is a short-term success.

Other consequences are not short-term at all.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'm fond of this author's works, but this one is my favorite, because it dismisses the obligatory Romance plot-thread in favor of developing a wide span of character relationships. (Which is characteristic of all their works, but the absence of a romantic relationship for the main character meant that the other relationships were even more in the foreground.) And for me, the lack of smut scenes is a serious plus. I also really liked that the Voldemort plotthread is fully developed, with all the characters playing a role... and finished by about halfway through the story, allowing the rest of the story to focus on the aftermath and the changes that wizarding society has to face eventually.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This story more or less single-handedly got me back into the FMA fandom, after I stalled out on it over ten years ago. (I didn't really care for the 2003 anime. So it goes.) The action/mystery plot is fascinating, and seeing how people adjust to an Ed who is increasingly committed to doing something about the mess the country is in, while still remaining fiercely himself, is loads of fun. I do wish that the main plotline weren't resolved with so little active involvement from the main characters, but that's a minor blip, and the intricate loyalty-relationships and action make up for that.

(It also gives Heinkel and Darius a lot of play, which I adore, because they really deserve more love. For minor, last-minute additions to the storyline, they're awesome characters, and the cross-generational friendship they have with Ed in canon is really explored and expanded here.)

(I do have to wonder where this idea that Ed swears like a sailor came from. Speaking as someone who sticks to the Japanese versions, he never struck me as the cursing type; he's insolent and not particularly respectful, but that's not quite the same thing.)

    Summary

Unwillingly forced to serve as a human trial for a crazy alchemist experimenting with time travel, Edward Elric finds himself standing across from Truth in the moment it takes his leg from him. Armed with the knowledge of what's to come and burdened with guilt for the choices he'd made as an adult, Ed sets out to fix every mistake he ever made and save every life they ever lost, no matter what it takes.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I sometimes enjoy "a character finds themselves at the start of the series with full knowledge of what's coming" stories, so long as they're handled well. By which I mean, the time-traveled character doesn't end up ridiculously overpowered, they end up facing a different set of challenges, and they aren't stupid about keeping their secrets or revealing everything carelessly.

This story strikes a good balance. Ed ends up a little overpowered, all things considered - but he works for the new skills, in a believable way. I also like the way the story depicts him gathering allies, and weighing how much he lets each of them in on the full story.

One warning, though: for me, at least, the romance aspect got to be a little problematic, in a couple of ways. One part was the way the story insisted that Ed was really his mental age, without any acknowledgement of how his physical age would have affected that. (Teenage hormones, for example, were mostly played for laughs, nevermind that teenagers are going through some major physical and neurological changes that will have an effect.) More frustrating was the way that, once the romance arc swung into gear, the save-the-world aspect of the plot seemed to get mostly sidelined. Granted, at that point Ed and company were playing a waiting game, but I would have liked a bit more relationship-independent plot!

    Overall, though, a fun read.

Oh my. This... is adorable. And something I can genuinely see happening. Because Adrien's got a mischievous streak to match Plagg, and of course he'd know make-up, it's part of his job.
