    Summary

The stigma against human augmentation has never lifted – not after the initial kinks in the operating software and hardware integrations resulted in some curious physical and personality…defects. Despite the lives it’s subsequently saved, the tests the procedures have passed, and the unending barrage of PR stunts and ad campaigns.

None of that matters – God, the papers still refer to the riots – which had been in protest against the expense of post-op care and maintenance – as the ‘Rise of the Machines.’

John had just been a kid at Uni when it all happened, hadn’t really been arsed to care, and then he’d swanned off to join the army. Somewhere in that time the landscape had changed, and the first recipients of botched augmentations had stopped being victims and become something altogether more sinister.

And all the while, science had marched on, blissfully ignorant – or at least willfully so – continuing to innovate and improve.

And then John had gone and got himself shot, and science had taken him in like an overbearing mother, like a charity case, and hadn’t taken ‘no’ for an answer, hadn’t wanted ‘no’ for an answer –

And John hadn’t wanted to die.

The work involves extensive, intriguing science-fictional elements, which I love, including John's augmented shoulder. But primarily I'm recc'ing this because the writing is great. Consider these paragraphs summarizing one crucial scene from s1e1

    I won’t shoot. I won’t need to shoot; Sherlock won’t –

But Sherlock is. He’s taken something from that bottle, held it to the light, and now, now, now he’s bringing it towards his parted lips.

For John, the world pitches grey and slow.

For John, it is the easiest, the rightest thing in the world to bring the gun to aim, to bring his thoughts to a point, his mind to a focus. His lungs inhale, and halfway through the exhale, they slow to a halt. His heartbeat is a warsong in his veins. Men have lived and died under his hands while he listened to that song.

Absolutely fabulous. Realism, humor, romance and action in perfect balance.

“John! I wanted to give you boys some time,” she says, and pulls me into her kitchen before I can get out a word. “But if he’s up, I’ve made you some soup. I know you haven’t had time to get anything in.”
    “No, I haven’t. Thank you.”
    “How’s his head, dear?”
“Better, I think. Not great. I left him in the bath.”
She purses her lips and says, ever-so-gently, “Have you forgiven him?”
Not our housekeeper, but possibly our mum, I think. “I’m working at it.”
“He’s a trial at times, but he’s got a good heart.  He’s very fond of you, dear. It must have been just as hard on him, being away.”
“I think he had other things to occupy him, Mrs. H.” Where to get his next hit of charlie, for one, I add silently, uncharitably.

    Summary

After John's released and back home at Baker St, Sherlock still feels it. Down the centre of his chest there's an ache like a healing wound. A physical awareness of a body he usually ignores as much as he can. It's psychosomatic, nothing more interesting than that.

Lovely writing, beautiful pacing. Best post-S1 fic! Sherlock slowly permits himself to understand his feelings, with happy results. Authentic interactions with Mrs H, Mycroft & Lestrade.

Exquisitely funny and goofy, featuring copious clones having copious, well-written sex.

Part 1, after John and Sherlock have been fucking for a week:
“Did you purposely entice me in to a sexual relationship with you just so you could move me in here and have the other room for yourself?”

Sherlock hummed with contentment and put his nose underneath John’s ear so he could smell him. “Sounds like something I might do,” he mumbled, “but no.”

Part 2: Sherlock has his lab, and has genetically engineered a friendly creature with tentacles. oh my goodness such shenanigans ensue!
“I don’t know. Yesterday I was about to inject Didi with aconitine, but… I just couldn’t. She’s too advanced. She elicits sympathy.” Sherlock said this as though he were annoyed by it.

    “So Didi’s a girl?”

“Who knows? But it sounds right. Boy and a girl.”

“And since when does anything elicit sympathy from you?”

“I know,” said Sherlock. “I’m baffled as well.”

Part 3: Sherlock cooks up a super love potion -- and demands that John service him
He vaguely recognised the same urgently randy behavior that Sherlock had displayed a few months previous, and though Sherlock had not revealed the existence of the cocktail, his request that John operate the machine in the laboratory fairly well confirmed John’s suspicions that it had something to do with an experiment. However, seeing as how Sherlock appeared not to have sprouted any new genital appendages, and having sex with him caused John no dizziness, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, or drowsiness (WARNING, John thought amusedly, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY WHILST COPULATING WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES), he kept his mouth shut and got his leg over.
But Sherlock's so randy he cooks up two John-clones to keep him satisfied. The results are hilarious and porn-o-riffic.

Part 4: Sherlock flies off the St Bart's roof, but this time he doesn't leave John stranded. Well, at least he tries not to:

    John –

If you are reading this, I am probably dead. You are likely looking at an android that resembles me to an uncanny degree. I created him shortly before writing this letter, and then equipped my laboratory with a dead-man’s switch: if three weeks went by without my entering a particular code into a particular device, this android would switch on automatically.
