Ease: The state of being comfortable
You're not at ease when you start playing baseball, or when you meet John. You're not at ease when you find out that your brother does drugs and runs a porn web sight. You're not at ease when Jake starts coming over to your house more and more, or when you hear your brother say things you shouldn't be hearing. You're not at ease, and you're not happy, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be.
In other words, Dave grows up like all the rest of us - struggling in new environments, finding out that his family isn't perfect, and, overall, coming to terms with himself and how he fits into this world.
