“We need you to be married,” Lamarque says.

Pretend to be married,” Fantine clarifies. “Or pretend to be boyfriends, that’s fine too.”

“It’s the living together that’s important.”

Grantaire swallows. “I beg your pardon?”

    ---

Or: the one where Enjolras and Grantaire are spies sent to a small village in the south of France to be undercover boyfriends.

    Summary

Grantaire isn’t sure what he’s signing up for when he answers an ad looking for a partner on a homestead out West, but he doesn’t have many other options. When he takes a chance and goes to a town called Amity, he’s met by Enjolras, who’s willing to share a home with him and teach him the work of the farm, but his heart is closed, and they’re wed in name only. Amity is full of friends and outlaws alike, and Grantaire thinks this might finally be a place where he can belong, but it’s hard for it to feel like a home when his husband won’t touch him, and the outlaws are a threat that grows with every passing day. If he can’t help keep Amity safe, and convince Enjolras that loving him is worth the risk, he might lose the only home he’s ever really had.

Nice and sweet, although a bit traditional for Les Mis.

    “R on line three, sir.”

“Thank you, Cosette, but I'm already on lines one and two--”

“He says it's important, sir.” Cosette readjusts her attendant clipboard. “A code black, sir.”

Enjolras and Combeferre's friendly debate about love, family structures, and women goes a wee tiny bit off the rails, and Enjolras reacts even more severely to being hit on when he's interested than when he's not.

    Summary

“Sit down,” the doctor said. He took blood, three vials filling up dark red. “Any medical conditions?”

“No,” Dom said, and then his mouth kept going and said, “What if I want to volunteer for bonding?”

The doctor peered at him over the glasses. “Do you want to volunteer for bonding?”

It hung in the air. Dom felt it like a noose around his throat, squeezing. Twenty-five to life. “Yeah,” he said.

I love Astolat and I love bondfic so I knew I was in for a treat but it still exceeded my expectations. Bondfic is often about two characters getting thrown together into a sexual/romantic/intimate relationship with very little choice (ie the alternative is horrible/death). But in 'Life Sentence' Brian gets a chance to try it out, he takes his future bondmate out of prison and keeps him close for a couple of days to see who this guy he'd letting into his head is: he needs a very strong reason to refuse the sacrifice asked of him. Unfortunately? for him he discovers that Dom is very likeable and even if he comes from a life of crime, he can understand the desperation that led him there very personally.

*spoilers* Dom's utter defeat when shown the file, realising he can't go and leave all those people who need rescuing behind is heartbreaking. Equally marvellous is his bravado that he and Brian don't need magical bonds to do what they do best, to work together as one perfectly oiled machine (it's the metaphor they'd prefer!) and although I got quite distracted during the high speed chase where the hostages are rescued, I still totally got how high both of them were after, how natural their coming together seemed.

And the frustrating ride back? Knowing that every kilometer brings them closer to going their separate ways because they did not bond and there is nothing tying them together except their desire to be together.... That just was the cherry on a perfect cake. *Spoilers*

Basically want to reread forever, possibly podfic.
