Lydia was now eighteen. Had been eighteen for a few months, and she and Peter were finally able to be seen in public together. Lydia had been anxiously awaiting this day, having thought of it ever since she and Peter had begun whatever-the-hell-this-was on her seventeenth birthday. In order to celebrate, they were going out to eat. Peter hadn’t revealed the location to her, just told her what to wear.
But now here she was. Stuck in bed with the damn flu.

While Peter might not be part of the adrenaline junkie 90’s culture he can both appreciate and empathize with the sentiment, “Go big or go home.” He isn’t stupid enough to ascribe to it completely, of course, but the idea behind it is solid. Half-measures are pointless. So when he decides to court Lydia Martin, he doesn’t dilly dally. He gets right to the point.
Well, he gets right to a point. In retrospect it might not have been the point he was trying to make at all, but a beginning is a beginning. And to be fair, he’s out of practice.

She shifts her weight from one foot to the other and gives him a wary, sweeping glance. She finally breaks the silence. “I never figured you for a romantic.” Her voice is sharp and unforgiving. “Or were those the only clean clothes you could find in that hovel you call a house?”
She knows he's always conscious of his image, immaculate as hers, since vanity is a weakness they share. She knows this just as much as she knows the long, leather trench coat and red button down he's wearing are deliberate.
He pulls back her strawberry blonde hair from where it was shielding her neck and proceeds to caress her skin.
“But sweetheart,” He mocks. “It's our anniversary. I thought you'd appreciate the gesture.”
