    Summary

When Barnes stumbles into a small town in Maine at summer's end, he's been running a long time and doesn't expect to stay. But as weeks pass, he starts wondering whether all this time he hasn't been running away from, but towards something - the kindness of strangers, quiet fields, and a curious, yellow-eyed goshawk.

    Bookmarker's Notes

The one that is totally soul-rending from start to finish: Bucky knocked out of the soldier's skull from the ravine, way back then, and all the endless, crushing fallout from there on out. Periods of relative ease and autonomy, more realistic than ceaseless torture ever could be. Copious, desperate drug use just to survive. Failing serum. Deeply philosophical horror surrounding identity, its meaning, its impermanence, its subjectivity. Boatloads of arm horror, body horror, surgical horror, psychological horror. HORRIFYING. Not tied up and neatly packaged with a bow at the end, not by a long shot, thank Christ. This is a magnum opus.

    Summary

Steve, it's not your fault, Sam had tried to say, before Steve cut him off, and Steve doesn't think that's untrue so much as it's irrelevant; fault's got nothing to do with it. It's just—wrong. It's wrong. Steve couldn't wrap his head around it the first time, how wrong it was. Steve should have gone first. Was supposed to. Bucky could have carried on without Steve, he knows, but Steve without Bucky is a zero sum. There should never be a world that Steve is in and Bucky isn't.

    Summary

There’s something different when it’s Bucky’s hands cleaning his rifle, is all.

“What's got you blushing, Steve?” Bucky asks, low and serious, and Steve flushes harder, hot to his ears.

“I'm not,” he says anyway, and, ”leave it.”
