  5. Summary

NOT TECHNICALLY A SERIES! (See Notes).

An epistolary tale. After the Quest, Fraser takes a new, remote posting in the Northwest Territories. He corresponds with Ray Kowalski (in Chicago) and Ray Vecchio (in Florida); meanwhile Ray Kowalski gets in touch with Stella Vecchio. Many letters are exchanged.

That is the land of lost content,
    I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
    And cannot come again.

    “You do like dog sledding.”

“Yeah, I like it fine, but I will be honest with you here. I did not emigrate to Canada for the dogsledding, Fraser. It was a nice bonus, I grant you, but I’m here for - ” Ray paused, gaze firmly in front of him. “I’m here ‘cause a you, y’know. Which I did not in so many words tell my parents, no.”

    Summary

Ray'd learned enough Mountie-speak to know that that was not a good answer. "I'm very well, thank you," meant
that Fraser was okay; "I'm fine," meant that he really wasn't so good; "I'm all right," meant that he was bleeding and his intestines were hanging out of his abdomen; and "I don't feel so well," meant that he was dead.
