Summary
Madeleine is a safe fantasy, because he is not real; he had never been real; and so he is safe. Javert will not look at Valjean the next time they play draughts or visit the Jardin des Plantes and wonder if his hands would feel different from the mayor’s dimly remembered handclasp, or from the touch of the phantom who lives only in Javert’s imagination.
Jean-le-Cric is harder to construct in his mind, because Javert cannot remember his face.
(Or: "Javert thinking about getting doubleteamed by Valjean and Madeleine.")
