Look! Look! Fresh Young Blades! With canon awareness and sensitivity, this piece offers a progression of "unseen scene" episode tags in which Jacqueline encounters the Queen, dancing delicately around the secret of Jacqueline's identity and the secret of the Queen's insight.

    Bookmarker's Notes

In 1995, Susan G. issued a challenge called "Forever Not." How would you bring Forever Knight to a close? Many daring, powerful stories came in response, turning "Forever Not" into more of a subgenre than a game. But when TPTB ended the series the following year, that particular creative well dried up; new stories fought or accepted canon's ending, but no longer boldly imagined what no fan had imagined before, blithely uninfluenced by that ending.

"Approaching Dawn" strikes me as a good old-fashioned "Forever Not," tragic and triumphant and unexpected, heedless of the final episodes.

"Full of Grace" is an epistolary tale that sweeps across all three seasons before exploding the finale. It builds a richly rounded life for Grace while exposing key canon events from her side and shaping an arc for her relationship with Natalie -- from early misapprehensions, through holding at arm's length, to adopting Natalie's peril as her responsibility. Invoking FK's multiple canonical psychics and shamans, this story cleverly makes Grace a Gullah herb doctor, a twist that both dramatizes lost opportunities and enables a stunning climax.

Janette's whim to take a closer look at Nick's mortal life triggers a miniature comedy of manners when she turns up, unexpected, in Natalie's domain. Character-appropriate banter bobs on the ocean of how much they all have yet to learn about each other at this early canonical point. Interestingly (and unusually for a first-season meeting between Janette and Natalie), "Could They Choose Between" builds its motivations up from Schanke taking refuge at the Raven in "Hunters," rather than from the "Cherry Blossoms" tag.

"Darkness Shall Have No Dominion" resonates with Nick's perspective. It weighs hope and despair, connection and alienation, through brisk action in the professional case of a missing child and the personal concerns of Nick's human friends. The story builds angst as well as suspense on references to flight, hunger, freezing night and burning day. At the last, as the lost boy is saved, the seasonal setting offers a flourish on what might or might not be a miracle. The story renews Nick's commitment in a manner not only satisfying, but triumphant.

    Bookmarker's Notes

[Warning: violence.] This chilling interlude of villain-on-villain carnage characterizes Lacroix with thorough canonical resonance — cruel, possessive, territorial, clever — in a third-season context, out of Nick's sight, untethered by the agreement about "mindless killing" invading Nick's life. Lacroix's retaliation is elegantly repulsive. "Drowning" responds to a "worst-case survival scenario" challenge of "how to escape from a sinking car," and the use of Nick's beloved Caddy twists a knife; additionally, a passing mention of Tracy intrigues. This ruthless action drama celebrates the conundrum of Lacroix as Nick's antithesis and ally.

This story beautifully projects a taut, canon-compliant future, with exquisite mood, tone and characterization. It may be happily read as gen (its author intends pre-slash).

I discovered this piece through a remix of it. The remix is nice, but the original turned out to appeal much more to me, personally. It is slow, gentle, seasonal, only subtly futuristic, and satisfying in both separation and reunion.
