    Summary

"Why did all the pretty beasts flock to the tar, only to slowly die? They knew no better, as to the parched and trusting the tar appeared as welcoming water, not seeing it for the predator it was until it swallowed them whole."

    Summary

The loud, sickening crack of his bones breaking drowned out the wet thud of the other man's body hitting the ground beside him. Pain, hot and crackling, consumed his lower body in a burning rush. His visor shattered with a burst of sparks when his head slammed against the dirty floor, his vision blinking out and leaving him completely blind, the communicator crushed and hissing before it to gave out with a dying whine. His lungs didn't even give him air enough to scream. Blood filled his mouth, gurgling as he tried in vain to force words past his lips. Gabe, Gabe I'm down here, please don't—

The other man started to scream.

    Summary

    It came from the sea.

The war is long over, and the world has sunk back into the everyday rut of trying to survive. Jack Morrison, battle-scarred and drowning in maritime superstition, is cast off on the solitary shores of a fisherman's life and intent on building something with the little that he has.

But the sea is an unfathomable, dread thing that does not concern itself with the peace that men try to find for themselves, and when the beaching of an unnatural creature coincides with the arrival of a stranger it threatens to drag him back in.

    Summary

It is rare for graduates of the Soldier Enhancement Program to contract illness, what with how their enhanced immune systems are more or less designed to search, attack, and destroy any unknown, dangerous, or foreign pathogens, but it does not mean that it is outside the realm of impossibility for it to happen.

Which is why, when Jack wakes up one morning with a twinge in his chest and a tickle in his throat that just will not quit, he is not at all surprised to see the small fleck of a purple petal stare up at him from a landing pad of black leather when he coughs into his hand. He has seen this symptom before — in himself no less — though of course, he had been much younger and much more impressionable the first time he coughed out a flower petal, unable to believe such a thing could even happen, despite the proof that came out of his very mouth.
