Mostly this makes them a bit funny and much more uninhibited.

They're works that either break the fourth wall, have self-aware characters, or make mention of things in the fandom that the characters shouldn't be aware of but nonetheless are. Some are just weird "what if" types of things -- you'll see what I mean when you read it.
