Summary
He has only three conversations to his name, and the little god of mischief is already thinking how he will spend them. He is already counting his words, already weighing his options.
He thinks of his brother, the kindest, daftest man ever to grace the Nine Realms. He thinks of hostile Leah, whose harsh words, he has always hoped, hide affection. He thinks of Jack – of a quick smile and laughing eyes, of feet burned raw and blistered with the proof of devotion.
Loki's heart twists sideways to consider what will come of the spirit of winter when his conversations have ended – to consider the unwanted exile his absence will reinstate. Ikol does not see the boy that comes with the wind, after all.
The man he used to be has no use for the tales Midgardians tell their children.

Summary
The night is full of gleaming sand and fantastical shapes, and it has been that way for as long as Jack can remember. Since a time when a glance his way was a treasure to be prized, Sandy has offered smiles. Since a time when attention was rare enough to be near-nonexistent, the forms of other people's dreams have reacted to his presence, come close to caper about him.
Now Jack knows that the small man who comes nightly atop his cloud of dreams is not too busy to disdain company on his perch. Now he knows that Sandy doesn't mind said company leaning against him, pleasantly drowsy with the effects of sleep sand. Now he knows that the dreamsmith likes off-handed comments about the glittering scene unfolding in the darkened world below. "Lemme guess – the unicorn's for Cupcake," and "That spaceship is way cooler than the one last week," and "Only five heads? C'mon, don't be stingy."

Summary
It comes upon him at strange moments, the desire to shape his thoughts. He scratches designs into tree bark and onto the ice of puddles. He traces snowflakes in the frost on window panes and forms the outlines with twigs and draws them with his fingers in the dirt. He incorporates these small details, these things that are so refreshingly new to him.
And for the first time ever, someone sees him at his work.

Summary
Jack redoubles his efforts – yells Loki's name until he's hoarse. He searches the likeliest places and then the improbable ones, crossing and re-crossing the Oklahoma countryside. He finally catches sight of the boy by chance, a lone figure in a drift of snow, green and black on white. A bundle of wood is clutched in his arms and he hunches against the wind, and Jack swoops down to land before him with a crow of delight.
"However did you-" Loki begins – but he gets no farther, because Jack bowls him over when he wraps the boy in an impulsive hug, tight and sudden and relieved.
"It's going crazy out there," Jack says when he pulls back, earnestly concerned. "Everything's on fire. Did you see the smoke?"
And Loki – clever Loki, always ready with a quip and a smile – Loki, the most self-assured person Jack has ever known – Loki, his first and only friend – begins to cry, face crumpling like a snowman too long in the sun.

Summary
The light has almost gone when he arrives at the tiny clutch of houses, and the windows are bright with the flickering glow of lit fireplaces. The streets are empty, but within there is conversation and warmth, casual affection and laughter. Hands are held and hair is tousled; small children nestle close to their parents’ sides. Dinner is brought to tables of rough-hewn wood – not much, for in this season there is never much – but Jack finds his gaze drawn to the sight, regardless, for even this little bit is more than he has. These simple pleasures, these small luxuries so taken for granted, infect him with the ache of longing.
But tonight, they do not paralyze him here, silent and alone. They do not force him to linger as he so often does. Tonight, even the tantalizing prospect of what he does not have – light and companionship, food and family and love – can be set aside in favor of what is soon to be.
For tonight, St. Nicholas is coming. Someone will be here for him, and that makes all the difference.

Summary
Two long, thin scratches sit stark against his pale skin, narrow trickles of crimson blood trailing down into his trousers. Jack jerks his head up to stare at North again, whose eyes are wide and focused on the scratches.
(Or, the one where Pitch steals Jack's staff and slowly, tortuously, destroys it and, by extension, Jack; everything that happens to the staff also happens to Jack.)
