Callused fingertips brushed the back of his hand and he looked up at Thor. He hadn’t even heard or felt him slide over so that they were next to each other. “I do not want to be a secret, not something dark and wrong to be afraid of,” Thor said slowly. “I have never wanted to do something I am ashamed of. But if this were merely something private, just between us, just for us...that I could live with.”
At last, Steve swallowed thickly, his hand turning over to fit against Thor’s, entwining their fingers together. Hand in hand, into the crucible.
“I…I’d like to try.”

Summary
It is at first no more than a shape, so easily dismissed as a trick of shadow or perhaps a beast seeking this new intruder to its realm. Thor has seen real monsters, and he does not fear the paltry imitations Midgard offers with little teeth and little claws and little screams and roars. It is the work of a moment, a shift of light, for Thor to see it is no beast or shadow.
It is a mortal, sinking downward into the depths below.

Summary
The thing, the first time -- this happened, Steve could have spun it as a comfort thing. Every soldier has nightmares, even ones that don’t face down aliens and monsters and all the things that are supposed to live under the bed and inside the closet when you’re a kid, and die off one by one the older you get. He’d had a bad night and then Thor was there, impossible and solid and comforting. If anyone else on the team understands what it’s like to be completely displaced in the world, it’s Thor.
