“Don't ask me to prove what I'd do to free the hostages. Just - don't.”
Owen Harper swore once he'd never set foot in a hospital in a staff capacity again. But an accident with an alien artefact puts him exactly where he doesn't want to be: behind the administrator's desk in a large medical facility. To make matters worse, it's somewhere called Barrayar, which seems to combine far future technology with the social attitudes of an ancient episode of Dr Kildare. And then he's called to a Situation on the roof, and meets someone who reminds him eeriely of home.

Summary
In The Veiled Lodger Watson claims Holmes was in practice for 23 years and that he assisted him for 17 of them. Knocking off three years for the Great Hiatus and assuming they met in 1881 gives us a Holmes who begins practice in 1878 and retires in 1901 or thereabouts to keep bees on the Sussex Downs. Watson appears to have lost contact with his old friend some time in the late 1900s, before they were reunited in August 1914, the reasons for this breach in their long friendship being unspecified.
Cold Comfort Farm, also set in Sussex, takes place some short time after "the Anglo-Nicaraguan Wars of 1948".
Once one applied a little arithmetic, the solution became elementary...

Summary
Gondal, 1670. The Court is a hot-bed of rumour, gossip and barely restrained tensions.
Queen Felicia worries. She worries about her inability to conceive a child, about her husband's wandering eye, about the ambitions of the heir-presumptive, Prince James and - most of all, perhaps - about what "that Royal brat", the fifteen-year-old hostage Prince Sherlock of Gaaldine, is going to spring on them all next.
A shot rings out across an autumnal lake in North-Eastern Gondal. But at whom was the gun truly aimed, and how many decades will it take before its echoes finally die?

An ill-assorted party of English travellers arrive in Gaaldine, on the very edge of Europe, where tensions and buried secrets in the party are about to erupt in bloody murder. Summary
From the shore at Aulis to the palace in Gaaldine, to be a princess is to be a sacrifice.
In a remote country residence Master Ripley, a physician famed for his knowledge of frenzy and melancholia, tends a distraught woman broken by the ruthless dynastic politics of her House. The unexpected arrival of her kinsman the Crown Prince is a catalyst which forces Ridley to recognise the brooding evil at the root of his patient's malady, a curse which has poisoned the lives of four generations and which sits so close to the Crown that treason itself ceases to be a relevant consideration.
Meanwhile, death, fire and destruction creep inland from the sea, and the wind is changing.
