Getting married might not be the most direct means of wrenching Bucky from SHIELD's grasp, but some things have waited long enough.
“She's not the girl you remember,” Natasha says.
Steve says, “I figured as much when she shot at me.”
The Bucky he remembers was never a girl, anyway; when he met her, at all of sixteen, she was a deadly woman, disguised in all the trappings of a tomboy and underestimated as such.
Bucky lets Steve find him. He doesn't remember much, but what he remembers is enough.
James Buchanan Barnes is a thing of beauty.
He kisses Steve in 1937, 1942, and later in 2014, 2015, and the kisses are different, to match the difference in Bucky, but they still light Steve up, spread fire through his veins and make him needy and greedy.
It cut Bucky to the core and he hated that more than anything. That as much as he could let Steve down, as he could get things wrong, he was still Bucky Barnes enough to care so very much about Steve Rogers.
“Steve,” Bucky said with a tired sigh, “please not tonight. I can’t do it tonight.”
“Can’t do what?” Steve asked.
“I can’t pretend tonight. I can’t be someone I don’t remember how to be, not tonight. Try me again tomorrow. I’ll muster it up, I swear. But tonight, I am so tired, pal.”
