Summary
This is a one-off, short piece that takes place when Sherlock is a kid; this piece was inspired by a gifset on my dash (link is not directed to my blog) describing how awful it is for Donovan and Anderson to mock Sherlock's experiments, because they were effectively barging in on his private property and poking fun at him. All of which led me to thinking about Sherlock's childhood, since Donovan and Anderson most definitely weren't the first bullies Sherlock had encountered, and voila!, this (short) story is the product of that line of thought.

Thanks to Sherlock's inability to resist satisfying his curiosity, he's been turned into a small child of about seven (or five, depending on who you're asking) years old. Rather than let Sherlock be taken to a laboratory, John volunteers to look after him. After all, he's had to look after a man-child, how hard can a child-child be?
Poor John. He has no idea.

Summary
Mycroft Holmes does not fear responsibility. At sixteen, he tasks himself with taking care of Sherlock, as his family is otherwise unequipped to deal with the boy's quirks. By eighteen, he is set to bring him to uni with him- to move into a flat in Oxford with a full time nanny of his choosing for the younger Holmes to aid him while he is in class. Perhaps, he feels that this is what adulthood is: sacrificing his youth for duty.
Greg Lestrade doesn't like to think about adulthood at all, if he can help it. He's eighteen- "youth without a future," he calls it. Growing up without much oversight, he's only ever looked after himself, running around the streets of inner-city London with his mates. His full schedule of parties and other activities left little time for him to cultivate his naturally quick wit, but he couldn't hide his inherent intelligence for long: after he applies to Oxford as an ironic joke, his acceptance comes as an unexpected awakening. When he finds himself throwing up on a stranger outside a mansion in the "nice part of town", his second awakening comes in the form of Mycroft Holmes- strange, sharp, and distant, yet warranting intense curiosity.
