I truly am putting the cart before the horse by publishing this now. I do believe it stands well enough on it’s own as a short story.
What you need to know is that Tara was singled out as an ally of the slayer and turned. It’s an ugly, but logical digression that could’ve easily happened in canon. Dawn does her problem child bit and winds up in real trouble instead of the weak, watered down version she found on the show. Both of these characters die when Sunnydale collapses. Tara takes Spike’s place and Dawn takes Anya’s.
This is about how we cope with grief.
