When John Egbert, who is mute, moves into the house next to him and starts public school for the first time in his life, it seems like fate that it would bring these two together so that Dave could help him through his school life as well as making friends. They could communicate, they were around the same age, and they were both teenage boys... too bad Dave kind of hates his guts at first. John’s not really too fond of this punk kid trying to be cool, either.... or perhaps he is.

Karkat breaks up with John and he ends up turning to self harm because kk just becomes a huge asshole and tells john he's horrible and worthless. In this story, vriska is john's best friend at first, but kind of just forgets about him when she starts dating terezi, karkat's cousin. Not only that, but karkat and sollux also start dating shortly after him and john break up. This, in john's case, doesn't help. Rose and Jade try helping him with his self harm problem but it doesn't seem to work. John ends up attempting suicide and Dave admits that he's in love with him.
