You just wanted to stay in Texas and fight with your brothers and maybe actually try for a relationship with Terezi instead of the weird sort of flirting limbo the two of you have been stuck in for years.
But of course Bro has other plans--when doesn't he?--and here you are, packing up everything and high-tailing it to Washington for reasons that he won't actually explain.
If that wasn't bad enough, you've apparently got a ghost living(?) in the attic and a weird kid across the street who likes to wear his sister's clothes and a murderer that you apparently called back into town totally by accident.

When John Egbert, who is mute, moves into the house next to him and starts public school for the first time in his life, it seems like fate that it would bring these two together so that Dave could help him through his school life and help him make friends. They could communicate, they were around the same age, and they were both teenage boys... too bad Dave kind of hates his guts. John’s not really too fond of this punk kid trying to be cool, either.... or maybe he is.

During his first period, science, he couldn't help but notice this blonde-haired kid with shades sitting behind him. He looked as if he was trying too hard to be cool. It was funny, really. He seemed like one of those people that hides how much a dork they really are.
It was cute, really. But John didn't know why his attention was locked onto this particular boy. He was pretty much like the rest; blending into the mix of hipsters and weeaboos. He was wrapped in baggy clothing, skinny, caked with freckles, had some nice blonde hair, and look emotionless with those shades covering his every thought. -
