Pascal's snoring kept Hubert up that night in Velanik. That's why he was awake to notice Asbel sneak out, and wonder where he'd gone, and go looking for him when the curiosity and worry get to be too much.
When he finds Asbel, his brother has been out for hours in the cold, trying to coax his eleth mixer into pouring out food for the impoverished town. Asbel doesn't understand why Hubert is furious to find him like this, with frostbitten hands and his persistent naivete.
Arguments happen, even as Hubert tries to warm him up. Something like understanding is reached, no matter how much it hurts to get there.

Their war is won. The usurper Cedric lies dead, and Richard has taken the throne. His success is thanks in part to Duke Gallen's forces, but mostly it was because of the support of his friends. They kept him sane, they kept him safe, and they made him smile on the long and lonely road as they outran his uncle's pursuing forces.
Alone on the throne that he'd fought so hard to reclaim, Richard finds himself missing those almost idyllic days of traveling together. He had direction, then, and something to strive for. He had friends to walk with him, eat with him, smile with him, and protect him. Without that, the King finds himself at a loss, afraid to move forward.
By rights, they should all part ways now, and go back to their own lives. But Richard isn't sure he wants to allow that. And a King can do what he pleases.
