There’s a boy exiting the doors as they approach. Where Derek is tan from hours outside, the boy is pale except for a few beauty marks on one cheek. He’s dressed in fine riding clothes, and flanked by a guard wearing the sign of the royal house. A noble, then. He’s younger than Derek, but, considering his higher station, a bow would be appropriate. Despite that, Derek can’t help looking curiously at the boy, who’s looking back at Derek with just as much interest. For a moment, their eyes meet - the boy’s are a deep amber in the sunlit courtyard, ringed by long, tawny lashes.

A gloved hand smacks the back of Derek’s head and he instinctively flinches away, hunching his shoulders. He loses track of the other boy as they pass one another, and as he turns to get another look, the knight grabs his shoulder and marches him forward into the stable.

“Keep your eyes to yourself,” the knight instructs. “And next time, show the proper respect to Crown Prince Stiles.”

It is 1640 France, during the time of musketeers. Sherlock Kingsley Shackleton de Bergerace, a cadet serving in the French Military, is a brash, strong-willed fighter of many talents. In addition to being a champion duelist, he is a gifted poet, but he has the ability of deduction and great intelligence, the rude personality accompanying this makes him disliked throughout Paris. When he falls in love with his childhood friend John Watson, he thinks he is unworthy for his friend's love and instead uses his poetry to help his fellow cadet, Mary Morstan, woo the man.

“I don’t know jack shit, Captain,” It’s said in that way Jo has. She never calls him Captain unless it’s in front of other crews or in instances like this, wherein it holds a note of derision. Actually, it holds a whole orchestra of derision, which is quite extraordinary for one word. “Because you never tell me jack shit.”

Dean barely resists the urge to bang his head off the table he’s seated at; the large oak one he uses to chart routes and plot journeys. Really the only thing that stops him is the idea of the sighting vane from his backstaff getting imbedded in his eye.

    “I tell you everything.”

Jo responds with an exaggerated burst of laughter. “Yes, and the Dread Pirate Roberts is just a farm boy.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Written beautifully with vivid imagery and a distinct voice for each character. Emotion is strong in Shin-ah's backstory and Guen's especially. World building in ITSCD was the most interesting. Everything made a lot of sense, which I really appreciate.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Historical fics, imo, are exceptionally challenging to write well. An author has to navigate the temporal and locational settings as well as stay true to the characters in addition to adjusting their roles in that time period. Perhaps this is even harder to do in fanfiction, where the authors have more limited input on a character's personality. TroubleIWant has done a fantastic job - I wish that I had the time to sit down and read the whole fic in one sitting! I love the references to The Princess Bride & Arrow (Princess Theadora of Starling!!!) & Game of Thrones; which are always very uplifting. Of course the art was like getting PIECES OF PERFECTION oi4jfrlijsfdafd !!!!!!!!

    tldr; Yes!!! Read this!!!!!!
